Geminids are out Tomorrow

SleepingbagastronomyWell, here I am in rainy Illinois (no, that’s not me in the picture at left) and if the forecast for this area holds, I’m going to be sitting underneath lots of clouds while the Geminds fly overhead.

Just a reminder, they will peak tomorrow night starting around 10:30pm or so Eastern time and it will last for several hours afterward. Astronomy Buff commenter Tom had the best idea I’ve heard in a long time: plan on taking out a sleeping bag, wine and your significant other and enjoy the show.

Spending several hours under the stars like that can only be a good thing and it’ll do wonders for your social life.

I hope you guys will comment on how good the event was where you were, you can leave out the sleeping bag details if you like.

    Geminids were nice, but nothing like a few years ago (although that may have been Leonid).

    There’s a somewhat large field near my house owned by the city, and a nearby little league baseball field next to that which thankfully didn’t have many lights on.

    We got to the field around midnight, 4 friends, the wife and I, and settled onto blankets in the field.

    I live in Tampa, Florida, so there is quite a bit of light pollution, but the skies were fairly clear above our heads. It was a bit hazy near the horizon in every direction, but we were none-the-less able to see a few meteors during each 10 minute period.

    The best part was that every once in a while, someone would be talking, and someone else would ask them to be quiet, as if we were going to scare them away! They’re not wild deer for goodness sakes!

    Having to work today, I didn’t stay out as late as the rest of my group, but still got to see a good 10-12 meteors before calling it a night.

    One or two were quite bright and seemed large, in comparison to the rest, but were nothing like meteor showers I’ve seen in times past.

    Thank you very much for the posts about this shower, as the local news didn’t mention it until last night, and we would have missed it.

    Our organization hosted a public viewing of the Geminid meteor shower last dec14-15. A lot people came and enjoyed the meteor activity… :D They were screaming in delight as they saw these meteors pass across the sky :D. I saw 70 meteors while two of my friends saw a hundred meteors. Compared last year’s Geminids and other meteor shower I saw this year, Geminids 2007 is the best meteor shower I ever had.
