Supernatural at Comic Con: Jensen Ackles

JJ_ComicCon_3 Sunday was Supernatural day at Comic Con and myself and a few other reporters got to have a little five-on-one  with Kripke and the boys.

Claiming to be sleep-deprived (they shot until 3 am on Saturday and had to be up nearly that early on Sunday to make Comic Con), but looking terrific nonetheless, Jensen Ackles sat down beside me with a big smile and a great deal of excitement over the new season.

But before that, he had fun lining up all of our little tape recorders in front of him, drawing them in like a gambler looking for sevens at the craps table. “Yeah, baby, bring it around!”

It’s no secret that Dean is coming back from Hell in the season opener, but still I warn you that there may be spoilers ahead.

Says Jensen of the new season, “It’s definitely a big turn in the direction it’s been heading for the past three seasons.  Now they’re making Dean an integral part of the mythology of the show, which also means a lot more work for me.”  He groans and shakes his head but it’s easy to see that it’s all for show.  “I think Jared had four days off the first episode which is more than I’ve had in a season. Kripke’s words were ‘you’re a victim of your own success,’ so it’s kind of a double edged sword.

“Dean is not just trying to save his brother from his destiny, now [he's] trying to figure out what’s in store for himself. From what I understand, it’s going to be a pretty epic season.”

CC_panel_02 Rolling into a fourth season has its ups and downs.  On the upside, he’s pleased by how the writing staff has been able to integrate what he’s brought to the character of Dean, seeing it very much as a collaborative process.  But as much as he loves the role, he’s ready to call it quits after season five when his contract ends.

“I think five would be good,”  And then he offers up a smirky smile.  “If I was on Lost, then maybe it would be a different story, it’s 30 characters and I’m living in Hawaii with 5 days off an episode.”  But he quickly turns it around into something much more important than the work load.  “Putting the work aside, as far as the story goes, I would never want people to get tired of it. I would never want people to be like, ‘okay, they’re phoning it in now.’ I’d rather go out strong, leave them wanting more.”

When it comes time to reflect on the prior season, Jensen, Kripke and the others all have a twinge of disappointment in their voices.  With the writer’s strike forcing them to unfold the “Dean’s deal” storyline faster than planned, it all didn’t come together as they’d hoped.  The one episode that stood out for all of them, though, was “Ghostfacers.”

CC_Panel_Ghostfacers_04 “I really loved shooting the “Ghostfacers” episode simply because it was a format we’d never dealt with before. Travis and AJ and those guys were hilarious to work with and very difficult to work with in the sense that our director just kinda let them go off page and improvise as much as they wanted. The difficultly came in just trying to keep a straight face through most of the takes.”

Jensen laughs softly as those days return to him and one person in particular comes to mind.  “I’ll bust him, but Jared is not good at that. If anybody is going to crack first, it’s him, and oh man, once you get the giggles it’s hard to stop. That was fun, a good time.”

But Jensen didn’t have a particularly good time when it came to the final episodes.  He was really pushed to his limits when it came to filming the final green screen shot of his descent into hell.

JJ_ComicCon_4 “It was miserable. I [spent] about four hours in prosthetics ’cause all those hooks and pieces through the wrists and cuffs and everything, and once I was done I walked on stage and they hooked me up.  Cuffs around both wrists and both ankles and then just a belt harness [around my waist] so I was wired up with five different wires.  Five guys wrenched me up about 13 feet in the air.  I had so much [fake] blood all over me, the harness slipped and the buckle was piercing into my hip.  I’m hanging there, all of my weight on this one buckle digging into my hip, and I hung there for what felt like ages and it got so bad that tears were rolling down my face and I was like, ‘let me down, you gotta let me down.’ It was tough, but it turned out to be a really cool shot.”

Click Here to Listen to Jensen Tell the Story

The only thing more torturous for Jensen than filming the final scene of the finale is being asked the question, “why did you make a horror movie on your summer vacation?”

From his reaction, I’d say he’s been asked this more than once.  And though it seems like the answer should be a philosophical diatribe on why horror is an honorable art form, the actual answer is much simpler.

“I only had about two months off so there weren’t a whole lot of projects that I was even available for. So the fact that this fit right into that time constraint, it just kind worked out to be that one.”

And with that it’s time to move on, to more reporters and then a room packed full of several thousand screaming fans.

“It’s funny,” says Jensen.  “We’re kind of isolated in this little corner of the world up in Vancouver and we spend so much time at work, we’re pretty much 8 days an episode, all day we’re there and the only people we see are each other. So when I come to places like this and I see people who thoroughly enjoy what [we're] doing, it’s very rewarding.”

Come back to SFUniverse for my interviews with Jared, Kripke, Sera Gamble, Ben Edlund and a word or two from The Ghostfacers themselves.

*** So what were Jensen and Jared doing in that photo I posted yesterday?  Here’s the scoop.  At the end of the press conference, the boys were rushed into a photo shoot with everyone taking shots of them at the same time.  The flashes were going off fast and furious and it left the J’s a bit shell shocked, not to mention blind.  So the first few snaps were kind of “mug shot,” and me, being the girl who doesn’t always realizes she’s talking out loud, suggested they give us something more interesting, like say “your best male model pose?” Next thing I know Jensen is unbuttoning his shirt and Jared is doing a ducky-lipped version of Blue Steele.  Search around on the Internet and you’ll also find a “Captain Morgan” pose which I wasn’t fast enough to capture.  Thanks guys!  We love it that you can have fun with the fans!

All photos by CBoris, happy to have you share, make icons, whatever you like, but a link back to SFUniverse.com would be greatly appreciated.

omg jensen i love you, i wanna see alot of you at supernatural session 4

  • Katie

Jensen is so awesome and looks insanly hot. Thanks for posting, looks like a great season ahead for Dean but the brothers being seperated does concern me.

  • Em

Thank you so much for a great interview. Loved Jensen’s answers. Poor man, a victim of his own success. :) I’m really excited for the new season though, it sounds like there are exciting things in store for BOTH brothers. Jared sounds like he’s got some awesome things coming up with Sam’s “dark side” turn and I can’t wait to see what Jensen has in store. I wish there could have been more time to find out a bit more about My Bloody Valentine as I’m actually pretty excited for that project. It looks cool and what little I’ve read actually made the characters look a bit more complex than alot of teen slasher films.

  • Ali

Wow, what an awesome interview! Thank you so much! I’m extremely excited for the new season after reading this… poor guy, with the meathook scene! He’s such a trooper, for going to the point of tears before he asked for relief. Talk about suffering for your art! And the plots this season sound SO GOOD. It’ll be amazing to see the boys follow their own mysteries while still living in each other’s space, worrying about each other, and loving each other more than anything. MAN, I’m so excited!!! Thanks again!

  • tina

Why bother just write Sam out please before he becomes a lamp in the corner..

  • Em

How is Sam becoming a Lamp? Unless Dean’s been a lamp all these years?. Sam still has all the same storyline he had before – and Jared seems pretty excited about the possibility of Sam sliding down the slippery slope.

It ought to give him alot of opportunity to stretch his acting muscles. I believe the 4 days off thing had to do with logistics – Dean and Sam most likely do not start off together in the season premiere.

It normally takes, I think, about 8 days to film an episode. If most of Dean’s scenes were on location and some involved major special effects, as I’d imagine a return from Hell would, and most of Sam’s scenes take place in a studio set, Jensen’s scenes alone or with others would take longer to film. So possibly, there would be Dean’s scenes with others(4 days), Sam’s scenes with others(2 or 3 days) and their scenes together(1 or 2 days).

The reason Jensen wouldn’t have that long off in any of the episode since then is because now they are together again and they are filming roughly the same amount of time.

It’s about time they brought Dean into the mytharc WITH Sam. It’s ridiculous to have a 2 hero show where only one hero has a pivotol role in the Mytharc. It’s why so often the story stalls out, why it feels like one brother or the other is getting short changed(either in emotional journey or ability to move the plot)

This may also mean that there is finally time to focus on Sam’s emotional life, which I know Sam fans in particular and many fans in general feel was often overshadowed by his having to be the sole carrier of the mytharc. It is work to carry the mytharc so naturally Jensen would say it meant more work, he’s got to worry not just about Dean’s emotional journey now, but his journey within the plot as well.

  • Ralna

    Thank you. This was great!

  • Kate

Great interview! I love that Dean’s brought into the mythology of the show. Can’t wait for next season!!!

  • rider

    I Love the interview.
    I like Jensen so much.
    cant wait for season 4.

  • Holly

Awesome hardly any Sam episode one, that’s exactly what I was hoping for as a Sam fan, like we weren’t shortchanged enough last season. Cheers for that writers, seriously.

  • Hermit

Thanks so much for the interview and a bit YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!. Love it that Dean is finally, finally, after 3 long years, finally part of the mytharc. Thank You Kripke for listening to us, thank you Jensen for your great performance and yes, this is really going to be epic because now the story of both brothers can move forward instead of stagnating. Great news and this puts a big smile in my heart. :D

  • Kay

Great interview! I am very excited about the upcoming season and Dean (finally!) having an integral place in the mytharc, with his own storyline. Jensen is a fantastic actor and I’m glad to hear that he’s so excited about the upcoming season. And thanks for the tidbit on My Bloody Valentine. I’m really looking forward to this movie.

  • Ella

Great interview, I love how excited he is about the new season.

I also love how serious he is about his work. That shot of him dangling in Hell was so powerful, and it was largely because of the way he portrayed the emotions of that scene, and that is a very interesting behind the scenes tidbit!

I am also extremely excited for the new season to start, and I haven’t been this excited since mid way through S1, and to hear him say categorically that Dean is FINALLY going to be tied into the mytharc is music to my ears!!

Great job Cynthia, thanks for posting!

Wonderful piece, I’m so glad you were there, because you know what fans want to know! I think it’s awesome that Jensen recognizes you, and also that your awesome suggestion turned into one of the best photos of the guys from the con. I’m glad I can digest the news about ‘season five being it’ for the show, now – and from Jensen himself. (Run-on sentences, yay!) The first moment I read it I was angry, but then when I read ‘why’ – I’m like ‘ohhh, okay.’ If that…makes…sense. LoL. Anyway, awesome stuff! I’m happy that Dean gets to be a piece of the puzzle that is the Winchester family.

What other highlites, besides “Supernatural”, can be shared from this past Comic-Con?

    Whatevs.

I never wanted Dean involved in Sam’s mytharc, here’s hoping it’s a completely seperate one because otherwise it’d be ridiculous, the demons have made no issue out of the fact they have no qualms in trying to kill Dean or seeing him as a real threat and that they consider Sam ‘special and someone to be feared’ so how does it make sense to now somehow make Dean mythically important.

It’s odd to me, very odd and I’m scared. Sams fans have been growing more and more concerned with him being constantly ignored for Dean storyline, here’s hoping that’s not the case this season or I fear the Sam fans will not be watching anymore.

How about some Sam spoilers and less of the Dean centric reveals? This show hasn’t been equal for a while now and it’s a disservice to JPad. Jensen Ackles is like One Tree Hill’s Lucas Scott the supposed revered boy that the audience is supposed to adore. I don’t.

He’s a good actor, and I like Dean, but i like Sam more and there has been zero insight into his head or feelings of late.

  • http://tengossip.com Taylor Blue

Cynthia…you are the luckiest person in the world… :)

  • Cynthia

Sam fans, have no fear, he’s got plenty to do in the coming season and I have an interview with him coming up later tonight or tomorrow. (Working on an audio file for that, too.)

I think one of the reasons you’re seeing so much Jensen around is that Jared got stuck in a major traffic jam (some LA people reported 4 to 6 hour drives on different days due to traffic) so he didn’t get to talk to everyone as much as Jensen did.

Jared did go to the Friday the 13th panel right after Supernatural so some reporters caught up to him there, too. Look around the horror movie sites for those bits! I was at the panel and I’ll have some of that when I write up Jared’s interview.

Thanks for reading and for all the feedback.

  • Cynthia

And one more note regarding Jared having “four days off.” Without giving too much away (For you spoilerphobes out there) – there’s not always a direct correlation between screen time and shoot time.

A very action heavy or special effect heavy scene can take a day to shoot and only be 3 minutes on the screen. A dialouge piece in a motel room can be three minutes and shot in two hours.

Wait for Jared’s comments, he’s excited with what’s coming and he’s already being put through his paces, so boy, he needed those four days off!

So basically you want the show all about Sam. I find it funny how some Sam fans come here and complain where Dean finally gets something of relevence outside of being Sam’s purse holder and to say the mytharc should be all about Sam is deneying Dean any importance and that is just not right. Last time I checked SN was not the Sam Winchester Show and this is suppose to be a 2 lead show and for once it is starting to be more balanced. Just because Jared has 4 days of shoot time off which Jensen has said in another interview was only during a big scene does not mean Sam is hardly in this and Sam has been far from Short Changed. Comparing Dean/Jensen to Lucas/CMM is an insult and Jensen far surpasses both and without Jensen/Dean I would not be watching the show.

  • Elise

The more vocal fans have won, Dean is clearly getting the lead I am off this show because the soap factor will get more and more prominent, like it did in S3.

I love Jared’s acting and the way he’s portrayed the changes in Sam – changes that the more static Dean isn’t providing at all. Pretty is good, but it gets boring after a while.

A pity they took the most exciting character on the show (together with John) and instead opted on the pretty boy.

This means the show will go soap in no time. The ratings will show it too. I hope Sam gets killed off and Jared gets a lead in a new show. Hes proven that he can do more than pretty and deserves more screen-time than he’s getting!

Good luck Jensen – I hope you can keep this show interesting all on your ownm because that’s clearly where this is going.

  • http://tengossip.com Taylor Blue

I can’t believe all this fuss over Jensen…I think that in the past season there was more of Jared than ever before. I think without Jared there wouldn’t be a show. Just because some viewers, like me, to see alot of stuff on Jensen doesn’t mean that Jared is not in the picture.

I love Jared and Jensen’s interaction on the screen. I just think we were scared that Jensen wouldn’t be back.

I can’t wait to see Jared test his badness in the upcoming season.

  • Linda

Very nice interview, Cynthia, although I would have loved to hear a little more about My Bloody Valentine. Jensen looks stunning in that picture (he always does)! I’m surprised that anyone can remain coherent while speaking to him (he is beyond beautiful — I’m sure you agree!). Ahem.

Anyway, I’m glad to read about his excitement regarding the upcoming season, and I could tell by watching some of the videos of the panel that he is very excited (downright giddy even!) about what’s in store for Dean this season! [Although Jared, by contrast, seemed quite subdued and like he would have preferred to be anywhere else then sitting at that panel. LOL!] Jensen was engaging and charming in all of the interviews I’ve seen and read. And thank you for including the audio of him telling the story about filming that incredible scene in the finale! He always seems to go the extra mile, and puts in heart and soul into his performances. As a fan, I’m so very appreciative of that.

I’m always glad to hear Jensen talk about Dean and Dean’s story, because, even though he doesn’t take *himself* too seriously, he seems to take the show and Dean’s characterization seriously and he seems to put a lot of thought into his responses to questions, which I really appreciate. I’m very glad about Dean being more involved in the mytharc of the show. Jensen is such a strong and versatile actor, and I really think the show will benefit overall by including Dean equally into the show’s overall mytharc story, so that he has his own issues to deal with, rather than just keeping “watch” over Sam (which seemed to be the extent of his involvement in the Sam’s destiny-mytharc story up until now). Dean is such a great character, and by the show fully utilizing him, I do think that fans have much to be excited about in season four.

And I’m sorry Krista, but it seems to be that last season especially, Sam was front and center of the main overall storyline. Since Dean could not really be active in the story to save himself (for fear of Sam dropping dead), that was left to Sam. I think that on the contrary, the writers have focussed on Sam’s “destiny” and also his inner emotions. I don’t see this as a disservice to Jared. It shouldn’t require specific dialog (“let me tell you exactly how I feel”) by the writers all of the time to convey emotions. That’s part of the job of being an actor. I can truly *feel* Dean’s emotions merely by Jensen’s facial expressions and body language. I don’t think I’ve ever felt that I couldn’t “read” Dean’s feelings, even if the writer’s didn’t lay it all out for me specifically. And mostly that’s due to the talent of Jensen Ackles.

Jensen: “So when I come to places like this and I see people who thoroughly enjoy what [we’re] doing, it’s very rewarding.”

I love that Jensen finds these type of events and fan interactions so rewarding. I feel very fortunate to be one of his fans.

  • Oh Dean

Cynthia thanks for the lovely article.

Jensen deserves all the praise and recognition he gets from the fans and from TPTB. He has created an amazingly complex and lovable character.

I am just as excited as Jensen himself, that he is finally being given importance to the story besides just being Sam’s brother.

Whether anyone likes to admit it or not, he has carried this show for three years and is the main draw for most fans. So it’s about time Kripke & Co. recognize and reward him for that.

Having said that, I want to make it clear that I in no way think Sam/Jared will be pushed to the back-burner. It hasn’t happened yet, nor should it. I just think the story and character development are finally being spread equally between both brothers. The story is no longer just about Sam’s destiny but about the destiny of the Winchester brothers.

  • hermit

Elise, your post is totally unfair to both actors, the writers and the fans.

Pretty isn’t everything, and Jensen has talent to support his role in the show. He’s not just pretty, he’s an extremely talented man that has brought a lot to SN. Sam, as some have mentioned, has been the center of the story for 3 years while Dean had nothing to do but emo over Sam. So, stagnant character? You bet. With nothing to do but cry over hisbrother, I would say the character could have gone completely boring.

Luckly, Jensen has enogh talent that even with the limited role he had, he made the character of Dean dynamic and exciting. Now, the show isn’t giving him a lead and taking it away from Jared, it’s doing what it should have done since season 1. Involve Dean in the mytharc. This is and always has been a story of two brothers. It has two leads, not just one, and for 3 years one of those leads, Jensen, was sidelined all in the name of Sam the Hero with a Journey.

Now that things are finally being equalized, the Sam fans complain because Dean is getting his share of the plot that he was entiteled to but denied for the past three years.

The show is getting better, and if you think so little of Jared that you think the show has to be only about him in order for him to be noticed, then I really don’t know what to say.

  • http://tengossip.com Taylor Blue

Hermit, I agree…they have always been in it together with two leads…that’s why I don’t understand why they are getting upset about Jared. The show would be nothing without him.

This was an interview with just Jensen was it not? How come Jared has to be pushed in it with him?

  • Anie

Elise, Dean’s fans aren’t more vocal, there are just more of them. There have been since after the first episode, even though the show aired right after Jared’s former show. Jensen Ackles took a character that could have been a two bit cliche and immediately gave him alot more life and complexity simply through his acting choices.

The WRITERS picked up on that and were inspired by that. In Season One, in interviews done not long after the show started airing, Kripke highly praised Jensen’s ability to bring so much depth and subtext to the characterization.

It had nothing to do with loud fans. The writers could see it happening in front of them when they watched the finished product, which they saw before we ever did.

That doesn’t sound “Letting the Pretty Boy” win, that sounds like rewarding talent and hard work.

Jensen Ackles never coasted on his looks and he could have. He’s done his best stay removed from that sort of scene and the people who work with him from his fellow actors to the crews have always seemed to speak about him with affection AND respect.

“Dean is clearly getting the lead”

Dean has always been 1 of the 2 leads. Sam’s story isn’t being cut back on and this will in fact allow his character a greater opportunity to have the sort of emotional follow through that Sam fans have been whining has been lacking for the character. So unless all you Sam fans have been lying about seeing this as a 2 lead show all these years, nothing has changed besides Dean gaining a role in the mytharc beyond simply being Sam’s brother.

It has been explained time and again that the the 4 days off thing has nothing to do with the screentime Sam’s character gets but with the amount of time it took to film the effects heavy sequence involved in Dean’s. Maybe Cynthia should make this more clear in this article, though I think it’s pretty obvious. It takes more time to film, not more minutes on screen. You’re being just willfully ignorant to keep ignoring it.

Elise it is fans like you that make alot of Sam fans look bad. Jensen is hardly just a pretty face. He is a fantastic actor and if anything Sam was as front and center in S3 as he was in S1 and S2. You like Sam better fine but you do not need to bash and put down Jensen/Dean because not everything is all about Sam anymore and I am really sick of the Dean bashing because they are giving Dean and Jensen more to do then be a sidekick. It sounds like their is some fasinating things in store for both Sam and Dean and if you where hoping this would be the Sam Winchester show then maybey you should leave because I always felt it was about Sam and Dean Winchester. Jensen is a fantastic actor and Jared has done great things with Sam and Dean is such a wonderfully flawed and 3-D character and I for one am sick of all the Sam vrs Dean posts.

  • lassie91

Thank you so much for this interview!! I love reading interviews with Jensen when he gets to talk about Dean and the acting process. He loves it so much.

I’m glad to hear Kripke and Jensen are both satisfied to end the show after 5 years, if that was Kripke’s original plan, they should stick with it.

I love to hear that Dean will finally have an active role in the mytharc. I don’t understand some of the other comments here that Sam has been a lamp or that the show has never centered around him. The story started with Sam and Jess, it became about Sam’s Destiny, will he become evil or not, did he come back right or wrong and I could go on. Kripke has said that Season 4 we’ll find out what what Sam was doing while Dean was in Hell, he’s also said we’ll find out more about Mary (which ties into why she apologized to Sam in “Home”, also Sam is keeping all the secrets from Dean about the Demon and Mary and Mary’s family/friends being dead), we’ve got Sam’s powers, and I could go on again.

Based on some of the comments by some of the SamFans here, I guess they’d only be happy if Dean had really died and then the show could change it’s name to The Sam Winchester Show.

  • Deanzilla

Sam fans have every right to be worried about Sam getting screwed over. I guess SPN fandom was okay when it was just Dean girls complaining. God forbid that Sam fans might have wishes for their character that might interfere with Dean being placed on a pedestal and worshipped by the writers any more than he already has been.

Dean’s character was better fleshed out than Sam’s from the get go. Jensen has always had more material to work with and build on. Which led to him getting even more in season 2, to the point where Kripke forgot that Sam was John’s son, too. That sucked out loud, but Kripke blew it off as being too late to fix. Yet Dean still gets his Daddy issues in season 3; guess nothing is ever too late for Dean.

Sam’s story was freaking stalled for two seasons just so Dean could get pushed into the forefront. Congratulations, Dean Girls. You Won.

Is anything going to happen for Sam besides being treated like a villain while Dean heroically steps up to the plate and kills him to save the world? I want to have something to look forward to, and I’d love it if the show actually treated Sam like a hero and a human being for once.

How do you set up viewer prejudice? Keep the audience distant from your character while telling them that if he’s not evil now, he just might be down the road. Sam has had all these barriers put up between him and the audience, between him and his own story. It is bad writing and bad storytelling.

Since this is an article on Jensen, I’ll leave off and say that I think he is a fine actor and a decent person. I appreciate all the hard work he puts into the show and wish him the best.

Thank you so much for this wonderful and insightful interview with the very talented Jensen Ackles!! Jensen deserves all the praise and recognition he gets! He is hardworking and extremely good at what he does! It is really great to hear that he is equalized with Sam this season.

Even if some are dissatisfied, there are no need to bash a fantastic actor like Jensen, he has given a lot of depth to Dean and therefore made this character so popular. I agree with those who praised the writers for recognizing Jensen talent and what he did with the character Dean. Jensen you are the best!!! Good luck with MBV! I will see it and bring all my friends with me!!!

Fantastic interview with my favourite actor! I agree with all the above that speak highly of him and his talent! Jensen has done a magnificent job. It is sooo amazing what he is able to “say” with his eyes and bodylanguage! Give the man an award!! :)

    Jensen we love you!! :)

Jensen Ackles rocks (quote from SV panel) :).

The above is true. Jensen I love you as Dean! There has never been a character that is so terrific IMO.

Jensen Ackles rocks!! Thank you so much for the interview. Jensen news – yay!!!

sometime i got confused with the fangirls.
they always talking about this story is about Dean or sam.
cmon ladies this show is about the brothers.
we cant called it Supernatural if the show
    just about Dean or sam.
the show is about brotherly bond.
kripke will make balanced for both character on season 4.
all we can do as fans is support this show for something more great and good.
    thats all matters.

Jensen Ackles interview!! Yay.. You made my day! This was really nice to read. He is my favourite actor, due to his brilliant acting. :)

  • Bella

Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester is the best thing that has ever happened. We have through this learned to know a truly talented actor! That he is so down to earth despite being extremely talented and extremely good-looking is great! Loved your interview. :)

  • Sue

thank you for posting a wonderful interview with a wonderful actor. Jensens Dean is a magnificent character. Jensen portrays him fantastic. Bring on season 4!

Good luck with MBV, which I of course will see!

  • Alison

What a man! Talented actor and handsome. Swoons….. I loved this interview. Thank you for doing it. Hope you will come back with more Jensen goodies later, also from MBV.

  • India

So now after all his protestations that Dean had no need to be part of the mythology, that his storyline was more interesting as it was, Kripke has caved into the very loud Dean fans. So now Dean gets all the characterisation *and * the plot. Well done, Dean girls. After 3 seasons of your constant whining and shouting, you got Kripke to listen to you in the end.

We can but hope that with Dean getting plot Sam will finally get some decent characterisation. Not that I’m holding my breath.

  • Claire

Wow. I came over here to read an interview of Jensen because I am a big fan of his, and I’m pretty dismayed by some of these comments.

I think Jensen is a fantastic actor (definitely NOT “just a pretty face”). I know that, in the beginning, Eric Kripke expected to tell a story of the brothers, but seemed to focus on Sam’s destiny. But I think that Jensen’s performance as Dean, maybe originally intended as more of a supporting role to Sam (?), just blew people away and I think that from the very beginning people gravitated toward Dean because Jensen was able to create this three-dimensional and layered character through his wonderful performances. I think the writers treat each brother equally, but the actor’s performances bring that extra something to the table. And I personally think that Jensen brought that extra something from the very beginning.

I like Jared as Sam too, but there’s just something about Jensen as Dean that draws me in and keeps me watching. Most of the other fans of the show feel the same way, so I don’t know if we’re more “vocal”, as some here are saying, but I do think that perhaps there are just a lot of fans who watch the show, maybe primarily (?), because of Jensen/Dean. But I still love both brothers and their interactions together.

If I’m understanding Kripke and others, since Dean has not really been tied to the mythology of the show for *himself*, this season he finally will be. I cannot imagine that fans of Sam would begrudge Dean (or Jensen) an equal place in the story ? I guess I don’t understand? Do the Sam fans only want to see Dean’s role as only a supporter to Sam’s story? I am so very excited about the upcoming season because of Dean being a bigger part of the show’s mythology and it seems like Jensen is as well. I don’t think Kripke “caved” by any means. I count myself among the many fans of Dean who are applauding Kripke for integrating Dean into the mythology. I think he realizes that Jensen/Dean deserves an equal role in the show and that the show will be better for it.

  • Alexa

I’am a hardcore Dean fan and I’am glad that he is getting some importance beside been Sam’s protective big brother, but I love Sam too!
They are both uniqe characters and should be respected!
I don’t see why some people feel the need to bash either Dean or Sam, they both should have the same importance on the show, it is after all, the story about 2 brothers!

  • Anie

“So now after all his protestations that Dean had no need to be part of the mythology, that his storyline was more interesting as it was, Kripke has caved into the very loud Dean fans. So now Dean gets all the characterisation *and * the plot. Well done, Dean girls. After 3 seasons of your constant whining and shouting, you got Kripke to listen to you in the end.

We can but hope that with Dean getting plot Sam will finally get some decent characterisation. Not that I’m holding my breath.”

More likely Kripke just admitted to himself that he was HOLDING back the story he wanted to tell by insisting on keeping Dean out of the mytharc even when the direction of the story itself seemed to say Dean ought to have some part of it. Did it ever occur to you it might help them tell SAM’S story to include Dean in the mytharc? You know in LOTR, Strider wasn’t originally supposed to be a lost king returning but as Tolkein wrote he realized that was what he was, I sure don’t think it took away from Frodo’s story to include Aragorn’s.

And now, Dean’s been to Hell, how the HELL do you keep him out of the mytharc, which involves DEMONS, after that. It would be ridiculous.

So yes, I’d fully expect that with Dean now able to take some of the weight of the mytharc off Sam, Sam will be able to get the emotional attention some felt he was lacking before. Half the spoilers about Sam so far are about his characterization and his EMOTIONAL life – though it seems to me that the Sam fans have been ignoring all of those so that way they can complain.

Shoes on the other foot now huh? You all would whine about how Sam needed characterization AND you wanted him to keep the mytharc all to himself and then couldn’t understand why it would bother us that Dean had no part in the mytharc. When last season all the Dean pre-season spoilers were about Dean eating cheeseburgers and having sex, you all seemed to think that was plenty enough of a storyline for Dean, it makes sense for the plotline, was often said. So you wanted Sam to have it all, the mytharc, the characterization, the action.

I think you guys have it far better than we did – what Sam’s supposed to be going through is deep and intense which is a heck of alot more interesting than sex and cheeseburgers. Sam STILL has his part in the mytharc, it’s the same thing he always had. His part hasn’t been shrunk, Dean’s has been expanded.

All some of us Dean fans wanted was balance. It sounds to me like we’ve got it.

  • Melody

Thank you for your post Claire! I agree totally. Jensen brought the something extra to Dean. To bash him for this is really unfair and pathetic! Jensen is a great and so very talented actor. Lets give him the respect he deserves!!

  • smellynelly

India, have you been reading the spoilers at all? Did you not read where Sam will be explored more? Where we find out how he’s been doing all these months without Dean? How Jared is excited that Sam is going to be delving into the darker side of himself? That Mary’s secret will let us know why she apologized to Sam? That Sam will be working on his powers? There is so much more and having Dean in the mytharc will allow all this to be explored because now they don’t have to stall the mytharc to give us another story, it can be intertwined with the standalones, where before it couldn’t because it was all about Sam and therefore all standalones would have still been all about Sam. I know some fans wanted the SuperSam SuperHour, but a lot of us really didn’t, and I’m including some Sam fans themselves and most bi-bros. So, it’s not Kripke caving in to the Dean fans, it’s Kripke coming to terms that in order to tell the story of two brothers, both have to be equally important, otherwise it’s just the story of one brother and his sidekick.

  • Andrea

I have been suffering from Jensen withdrawals, I was therefore so very happy to discover this interview. Thank you for posting! He is one of the good guys lets keep him safe!! (quote Todd Farmer – and boy is he right!)

    “Congratulations, Dean Girls. You Won.”

I appreciate the sentiment, but we really shouldn’t take the credit. Jensen created Dean girls, and their adoration for Dean, by being so compelling in his portrayal. Whatever accolades, whatever benefits come out of this, they’re due solely to Jensen and his talent. He deserves every bit of them.

  • Tash

People gravitate towards Dean not because the actor brings something extra to the part but because the Dean is written to be the obvious favorite(imo) I am not saying Jensen does not add layers – clearly he does, but Dean is the Jack Baur of supernatural – the wisecracking cool badass who gets to kill most of the bad guys, Sam is written as the emo kid who always needs his big brother to rescue him – I realise things have been changing in the last season but for the first two seasons thats how it has been. So yeah – many people like Dean more but the writing really sets it up like that. To those who say Sam fans should stop whining – if it was made clear that the first two episodes were all about Sam (and Jensen has said that the first two are all about Dean) then yeah Dean girls would be complaining a hell of alot louder than Sam fans. I am not concerned about who is in the mytharc or whatever – I am quite happy for Dean to be involved there – I just want the boys to share screentime – I know there will always be episodes that are more sam heavy and more dean heavy and as long as it balances out I am happy – but give me a break – its been months since we have seen the boys and if I am disappointed that I am maybe not going to see as much of sam as I am of Dean then that is my right – hey I miss my Sam – and the fact that Kripke comes across as a Dean girl has me worried – I don’t want the show to be all about Sam – I want it to be about Samndean.

  • Maja

Just wanted to say thank you the interview. It is good to hear JA`s thought about his character Dean and season 4 of SP. Jensen is amazing and adorable :)

  • Louis

Great interview. Great actor! Love you Jensen!!

  • Karina

Nice! Jensen looks good in the pictures as usual. That is however not why I like him. He is nice towards fans, acts splendidly and is down-to-earth. Looking forward to more breathtaking acting from you through season 4, Jensen. And also in MBV!!

  • Charlotte

“You all would whine about how Sam needed characterization AND you wanted him to keep the mytharc all to himself and then couldn’t understand why it would bother us that Dean had no part in the mytharc.”

I’m a Sam fan who is fine with Dean having a mythology of his own to play in. Splash around in the mytharc pool, Dean. Go for it, writers.

So, speaking only for myself, obviously, the worry for this particular Sam Fan is this: I’ve thought many times before that the show was going to really delve into some deep character exploration of Sam. Get to the bottom of his issues with John (especially the unresolved stuff after John’s death), or see him struggle with who/what he is, or really investigate where his very real fear of the hunting life that began at the age of eight came from and whether or not that was at the root of his rebellion, etc. There’s so many places they could have gone, but so far…not so much.

I have no doubt that in addition to Dean’s shiny new mytharc they’ll continue to give us his inner thoughts and feelings as they have in the past and probably have more episodes mapping out his dreams and/or nightmares in vivid technicolor so we know exactly what’s in his head in minute detail. However, I have no such history to draw on for Sam because they simply haven’t done it much yet, especially from the second season on, and I have no faith whatsoever that they will. Based on past experience, my trust that the writers give a damn about Sam’s psyche and inner landscape is about nil. So while I think it’s great that Dean gets to frolic in a mytharc all his own and the Dean fans are happy, I’m quite skeptical that the writers will listen to the concerns of the Sam fans and give them what they’ve been asking for all this time as well.

ANYWAY, that’s my particular concern. It isn’t because Jensen has a mytharc of his own, I honestly don’t care. It’s that I highly doubt we’ll get any serious insight into Sam. Ever. Kripke always seems to find something else to do. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised, but I highly, highly doubt it.

However, as this interview is about Jensen, it’s great to see how excited he is about the season and I wish him well. I’m sure he’ll do a great job angsting his way through a mytharc all his own.

  • immie_8

Thanks SO MUCH for the interview, Cynthia.

Wow, S4 sounds like it is going to be FABULOUS!!!

On another (very depressing) note, Jensen and Jared are both fantastic, hardworking actors and wonderful people, and I find it saddening that people seem to demean one when his/her favourite character isn’t getting everything that said fan wanted and more. I understand that some Sam fans are worried (and, hey, there are some Dean fans who wonder if this new storyline will still somehow end up being all about Sam) but there is NO need to be rude!!

Once again, thanks Cynthia, and thank you to all you fans who commented rationally and respectfully, y’all are one of the reasons I love this online community so much!!!

  • Megan

I thought I was reading a positive comment from a Sam fan concerning Dean, when I first started to read yours, Charlotte. I quickly understood I was wrong….

You contradict your self, first you say you are fine with Dean having a mythology of his own, then you end it all with “…Jensen(?) has a mytharc of his own, I honestly don`t care..”

We have seen a lot of insight in both Deans (lets stick to characters her) and Sams psyche. Or do we only see what we want to see? MS pops in my mind firstly, then all comments throughout season 3 that showed Sams angst and despair when he thought about Deans deal, what about his angst in AVSC?

I think Krikpe has done Sam justice, and Dean to some extent. That Dean apparantly gets involved is great!!

Jensen is a fantastic actor! What he has given us with character Dean, is excellent! Jensen has turned a 1 dimensional character into a “real” likable person, who many adores, – just like we adore the actor himself.

Great interview!! Thank you for posting – it was good to hear that he is excited about his character and the show! Jensen is a nice person and a really talented actor! Keep up the good work, Jensen!!

  • Pam

Jensen Ackles rocks! He gives the sweetest and bestest interviews ever! :) Thank you for giving us insight in the upcoming season.

I also want to ish Jensen good luck with MBV! I have read what especially Todd Farmer has written about JA, and Ja seems like a really likable guy! “The good guy – lets keep him safe”. :)

  • Sugar

I have been a fan of Jensen Ackles for quite some time now. He is a great guy, yes, I know because I have met him.

Always patient, polite and respectful of his fans! Good interview with a good man!!

  • spFan

I like the post. And it seems like Jensen is a fine man. I mean, with his interviews, he answers all the questions just fine. I’ve read alot of interviews he have had, (some might be real or some aren’t), but he has this consistency that i believe other hollywood celebrities don’t have. I don’t even read anything or watched a times when he brags or something. And his role as Dean, he portrays it perfectly. And for Jared’s fans, put it this way right, the show would not go that way without him in it. The attention might be with Jensen since as we all know, his role as Dean is really interesting. And i don’t know, for some reason, he’s really good at it. And by the way, if noticed in the comic con, how gentlemen he was, when one of the lady writer were about to sitdown, he stood up and fixed her chair. So lets just hope the Seaon 4 will go well like the previous seasons which I believe it will. and for Jensen and Jared, you guys rocks!

  • spFan

and by the way. do you happen to have the reason why Jared said: You’ll gonna rebreak Jensen heart guys? I can’t quite figure out? Did Jensen and Danneel broke up or something?

  • Miranda

spFan: I think what happened was that Jensen made a reference to Breakback mountain, realised it could be misunderstood, and said something like “easy, easy” to the audience, looked at Jared for support. Jared said then something like: “I`ll have to break Jensens heart” – meaning he didn`t want to do heartbreak mountain…… (Not that I think Jensen wanted to either)…. LOL …. That`s how I understood it…

  • Sallymay

Thank you Jensen, for a wonderful season 3, with great Ackting!! Good luck with MBV – looking forward to see it!! And of course I will follow Deans development in season 4! It will be a thrilling journey, because you play him!

    Take care!!

  • Lena

ITA, Megan. It seems that some Sam fans just want the “Sam Winchester Hour” or something? Why all the complaining through comments in Jensen’s interview though?

So, Charlotte, I guess I’m confused about your feeling that we have not had any serious insight into Sam’s emotions this season. Do you mean to say that we didn’t learn that: Sam was upset and dismayed by Dean’s apparent disinterest in being saved, Sam felt frustrated by Dean and felt he should care about himself, Sam was concerned about Dean’s recklessness and just wanted his brother back (“just cuz”), Sam felt like he needed to be more like Dean because he’s being left alone “in this crap hole of a world”, Sam felt lost and depressed (and enjoys whiskey!) because he couldn’t find a way to save Dean, Sam didn’t want to celebrate Christmas because of bad childhood memories and the fact that it was Dean’s last Christmas, Sam was desperate enough to seek out a doctor who has the secret to immortality, Sam was convinced they would find a way to save Dean, but in the end, Sam was completely destroyed by Dean’s death? I think we’ve had serious insight into Sam in S3, and in every season.

It seems to me that there are a lot of Sam fans that just don’t want Dean to have any place in the mythology besides being Sam’s protector. I guess Dean could be a german shepherd for all they care.

Anyway, I haven’t been this excited about Supernatural since the second season, and I feel that BOTH brothers are going to have very exciting story lines this season.

Oh and spFan: I think the “breaking Jensen’s heart” referred to Jared saying “NO” to a western themed episode, but Jensen really wanting to do one (apparently wearing ass-less chaps!).

  • jo

    JENSEN!JENSEN!JENSENJENSEN!

    JENSEN!JENSEN!JENSEN!JENSEN!

    MYTHARC!MYTHARC!MYTHARC!

    It’s a show people get a GRIP!

  • http://jensenandjared4ever.piczo.com Amanpreet Dhaliwal

OH GREAT here we go again!!!! Some ppl need to get this through there head, SUPERNATURAL IS NOPT COMPLETE WITHOUT ONE OF THEM OUT OF THE PICTURE. THIS SHOW HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT BOTH OF THEM. SERIOUSLY, I SAID THIS BEFORE AND IM GONNA SAY IT AGAIN, IF JENSEN AND JARED CAN GET ALONG AMAZINGLY WELL WHY CAN’T THE FANS.

  • http://jensenandjared4ever.piczo.com Amanpreet Dhaliwal

Anyways. Love u Jensen, can’t wait for Season 4 to begin. and Jensen is such a great guy, and so is Jared. . Can’t wait to see jared’s interview. Gonna be awesome.

  • Wanker

I’ve read lots of articles out of Comic Con and I have to say this one and the one with Jared’s interview are hands down my favorites.

Cynthia I think you have a really nice writing style and you go beyond the obvious to try and give us little pieces of who the boys really are.

    Thanks for that.

Now I was hesitant to wade in to the wank. But I just have to say that every time I see someone complaining that Sam doesn’t get enough character development, I have to wonder if we watch the same show. Jared has done a great job bringing the different layers to Sam and made him a strong and complex character.

I think Sam fans do both their favorite character and the actor who plays him, a real disservice by this type of complaining. It’s like you are dismissing all the hard work he has put into the character over the years.

So much of the characterization of both boys is in the nuance and subtext that they bring beyond what’s just in the script. Granted Jensen was great at this out of the gate, but Jared has really developed these skills as well. When you keep insisting that Sam has no character, you seem to be implying that Jared is somehow failing in this and I just don’t think that’s fair or true.

Sorry but as a fan of both actors and characters , I just had to get that of my chest.

  • Debbie C

What about Dean fans who say that Dean is just a side kick. They aren’t watching the same show I am. Dean is the “Hero” of the Hunter arc and has been pivotal throughout all 3 seasons. I seem to recall Dean killing Yellow Eyes, something even John never managed. When Sam tried to kill him, YED disappeared. In my opinion even when Sam’s myth arc was in the forefront of an episode, Dean had to be there to save the day. For example, AHBL 1 — definitely a Sam heavy episode, but Sam DIED… Dean had a wonderful scene at the end of the show that to this point is one of my all time favorites. How did Sam get out of that? Dean saved him by sacrificing himself in AHBL 2; a Dean heavy episode. Another great episode that involved Sam’s myth arc and needed Dean to save the day; Jus in Bello (Dean heavy). Yeah the demons were coming to kill Sam for Lilith… but it was Dean dealing with Henricksen and it was Dean that had the plan that nearly got everyone out of a very rough situation. OK, Sam got to say some cool Latin, but Dean was king of that episode… I think by giving Dean powers (I hope they are giving Dean powers) and bringing him more into the myth arc, it will take him from being a person willing to sacrifice himself for anybody, but especially his brother (there is only so many times he can do that), to a person that can eliminate the powerful baddies without dying in the process (always a good thing in my book).

I think this change is a good thing. Sam won’t be pushed into the background, Dean will just be more capable of playing with the big boys. Now that Sam hopefully will have some powers that he can use against them, Dean needs that same kind of access to maintain the balance. Before this Season Sam may have had powers, but he couldn’t control them. I am hoping he will find control this Season. If he does, Dean needs to get powers also to maintain the balance. We can’t have Sam with powers and Dean without because then Sam will need to protect Dean and that will mess up the whole dynamic they have going on. Dean needs to be capable of still kicking butt even though they are going to be going against bigger and badder demons / monsters in these next two seasons. I think it is going to be great… it is just listening to people jump to conclusions that is tough.

  • Alisia

I foind a bit strange Wanker, that you have to come here and tell how great you found Jareds interview???????

Personally I always enjoy Jensens take on things, interview with him is always highly appreciated and I loved this one!! Thank you for posting this!! I have read quite a few and listened to quite a few interviews with Jensen, and he is the best there is!!! :) He seems like a really nice guy!!

Jensen you rock!! I am so happy to hear about season 4, and the way the writers will include Dean in the mytharc!! Superb!!

As for you film project, all the best! I am sure MBV will rock too!

  • Mariana

    Lovely interview! Lovely man!

I don`t think I have been this intrigued by an actor for a long time. He has been called the new Steve McQueen by Patrick Lussier (director of MBV). It will be interesting to follow the wonderfully talented Mr Ackles career!!!

Good to hear about the upcoming season 4 and Deans place in the mytharc is thrilling!

  • Ellen

Thank you for posting this interview. I love to read about my favorite actor Jensen Ackles. He is fantastic in his role as Dean. It is good to see his hard work getting recognition!

  • Wanker

    Alisia chill.

I posted about both interviews here because I didn’t bother to read the comments in the Jared thread. I just assumed it would be more whining about how Sam has no character and since I’ve seen the same stuff posted on every single SPN board (probably by the same 3 or 4 fans), I didn’t want to read it again.

So when I saw it in this thread too, along with some rather nasty comments about the wonderful Jensen Ackles, I decided to state my opinion on how badly I think some of the Sam fans are behaving and have been for the past couple of years.

Debbie C, I agree that the Dean fans have also been whiny during much of the run of the show. However I have to admit that I have not seen too much of this since the season 3 finale. In fact comments from Dean fans have been almost universally positive since the season 4 spoilers came out.

At least they are able to recognize good stuff when they see it. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for my fellow Sam fans.

  • Wanker

Sorry DebbieC, I forgot to add that I completely agree with you that there is going to be a ton of great stuff for both Sam and Dean this season and I can hardly wait for September 18 to arrive.

  • Alisia

Wanker; my apologies!! I reread your comment, and I see I skipped a few words, you said this one and Jareds are the best…. Sorry. I read to fast first time and thought you only mentioned Jareds interview as the best. Therefore my comment. Sorry again!

  • Tash

Of course comments from dean fans have been universally posivtive since the season four spoilers have come out – the spoilers have all been about Dean – what could they possibly have to complain about?

  • Debbie C

Wanker, I didn’t read all the comments, but I did notice two comments in this thread that said something like it is about time they gave Dean and Jensen more to do than be a sidekick (just search for sidekick); one of those people later referred to Jensen as Jared’s purse holder. That type of thing seems to be a recurring complaint from Dean fans, just like the complaining from Sam fans that Dean gets all the characterizations, screen time, whatever. So far, the show I am watching is the story of two brothers. Sam needs Dean and Dean needs Sam. Up to this point, overall their screen time, lines, prominence seems to balance out in my opinion. It feels Dean heavy to me, but that might just be my desire to see Sam.

Now, it also might be my bias showing, but I tend to read most of those negative comments to be cracks against the writers, Kripke, or even Dean fans rather than against Dean/Jensen. Things like — write Sam out he might as well be a lamp… are kind of expressing worries (in a rather abrupt way) that Sam’s screen time will plummet; not drop, plummet. These were the same fears the Dean fans had after Dean went to Hell… I don’t know how many times I heard… what is it going to be the Sam show now? etc…. Jensen said that he had never had 4 days off in a season, let alone an episode. That makes Sam fans nervous… Especially considering the currently listed title for episode two. Since it is a spoiler, I will just tell people to check out IMDb if they are interested. Sometimes titles change, but this title kind of tells you what the prominent story line will be.

Since we all know there have been many episodes that are very heavy for one brother or the other… for example, Heart (Sam) and What is and What Should Never Be (Dean). Both are superior episodes that are heavy for one brother or the other, but the brothers interact enough that they will have a shot or two in each location, so they never seem to get a day off… Kind of like In My Time of Dying… Jensen was in every scene except for the quick scene with Bobby, and yet Jared was there often enough that he probably didn’t get much time off.

However, instead of looking like the show is going to be the “Dean show”; which some fans have intimated… My biggest fear, based on the writers’ and the boys’ interviews is that this is going to be the “Dean show” and the “Sam show”… the brothers are going to be separated for a period of time… Maybe Sam doesn’t believe that Dean is really his brother. Maybe he thinks he is a shapeshifter or the Trickster interfering again. Then, maybe Dean gets wind that Sam has been tinkering with his powers and the boys no longer trust each other and go their own ways on hunts for a while. That is my greatest fear. I didn’t like when they were fighting right after John’s death (I need my brotherly love)… But, I trust Kripke and company enough that if they are doing a heavy Dean episode or two to start, they will have a Sam heavy episode or two soon after.

Have faith and it will all work out :-)

  • Carola

Now, now…. Tash, there has been a lot of spoilers about Sam too. Jared is excited about Sam, strange thing some of his fans are not………

This interview with talented, wonderful and really nice Jensen is great! Thank you for posting it! I think the development in his character is well deserved!!

  • Moonlight

Fully agree that Jensen Ackles has portrayed Dean wonderfully! And it is exciting that he has a place in the mytharc for season 4. Thank you for the interview! It will be thrilling to see season 4!

  • Caryn

Wow, what Jensen went though for the last scene was so intense and it added to that scene because he was in agony as well. Great job and I can’t wait to see what is in store for Dean and Sam in season 4.

  • belladonna

What a guy! Jensen Ackles rocks!

Continue the good work, you deserve an emmy for your part in SP!! :)

  • mccenna

One of the best interviews I have read! Thank for giving us scoop about SP, and news about JA. Jensen is the best actor ever, nice towards fans and gives everything when he acts. Thank you for 3 thrilling seasons so far, and good luck with season 4 and MBV!!!!

  • dana

Thank youf or this great interview with Jensen. Man, – I love that man and his Ackting!

  • Ali

“the spoilers have all been about Dean”

That’s a lie. Straight-up. There have been a ton of spoilers about Sam.

  • Tash

Your right there have been spoilers about sam, and they are exciting ones too, and probably we are over reacting as fans tend to do, as Dean fans have done plenty of times in the past. And I am not trashing on Jensen here – I do think he is a very good actor who does a great job of portraying Dean. This is about the writers and Kripke – I am just frustrated that the majority of spoilers are focused on Dean, and according to Jared, the spoilers about delving deep into what Sam has been up to and his emotional state won’t pan out until between eps 8 and 15. I have seen the title to ep 2 and yeah first off its hilarious but its also worrying as is alot of the tidbits we have been getting. Ok so I will wait – see how it pans out and hope I am wrong.

  • Deanzilla

    “Congratulations, Dean Girls. You Won.”

“I appreciate the sentiment, but we really shouldn’t take the credit. Jensen created Dean girls, and their adoration for Dean, by being so compelling in his portrayal. Whatever accolades, whatever benefits come out of this, they’re due solely to Jensen and his talent. He deserves every bit of them.”

Jensen’s compelling portrayal of Dean is responsible for one of the most vicious, toxic group of fangirls I’ve ever encountered on the net? I’m sure he’d be embarrassed if he read some of the bashing that’s come out of his side of the fandom. Samfans are used to getting ganged up on and shivved for their opinions, no matter what board it seems to be. And oftentimes moderators let it happen or take part themselves.

Jensen is an excellent actor and a decent guy, but seriously, Dean’s character probably receives about 3/4 of the characterisation and the plot already. You’d have to be a really bad actor to lose with those kinds of odds in your favor. Jensen gets actual lines of dialogue to help establish his character, he gets his motivations spelled out from one end of the season to the other, he gets to own the season premieres and the season finales. Now he’s in the mytharc, and unlike Sam, his role will probably be explored thoroughly and consistently over the entire season. Sam has never had an entire season devoted to him and his plotlines. Seasons 2 and 3 were not mytharc heavy, but Dean’s Deal sl loomed over everything. In Season 2, while there was a mytharc, the entire running set up was created for Dean to make his deal. Nothing they did with Sam actually mattered, as it was setup for Dean. Oh, and then he got to kill the YED while Sam was slammed up against a wall.

And as a Samfan, it feels great when Kripke talks to a group of show fans, and says that Dean is the real hero of the show, “sorry Sam fans.” Kripke insults us directly, not to mention Sam. I think we have every right to be worried about how this season could turn out. It might end up being fantastic, the best season ever, but really, Kripke has yet to show he can be trusted to treat Sam with the care and attention that he’s needed since Devil’s Trap/IMTOD.

Yes, this is a show about two brothers. At least I don’t erase Dean out of the scene and make him invisible when Sam is there. I watch both brothers. I love Sam because he feels so real to me, and I love Dean, too. But Sam is my favorite, and I want to believe Kripke cares about him. Kripke makes that belief hard for me, nearly every time he opens his mouth.

Okay guys, time for a truce. I haven’t moderated out any comments though I’ve come close on a couple.

Jensen and Jared and everyone on Supernatural work very hard to bring you a spectacular show every week. As it is they have to battle with the ratings, the budgets and being on the smallest of the main networks. What they need is a united front from all the fans to help make it through this coming year and the one after.

Many people think TV production is a glamorous life, and granted it has it’s perks, but when you remember that these guys put it all out there week after week — driving themselves to emotionally and physically difficult places — filming in snow and 100 degree heat. Filming until 3 in the morning, 14 hour days and that’s not including the press and the promos and scripts to be learned.

Yes, I know it’s not coal mining, but it’s a lot of work and they appreciate when you appreciate it. So let’s show them how much we appreciate what they do but talking in a positive way going forward.

    Thanks!

    Cyn

what a gr8t interview. for all the people moaning about the jensen having more scenes then jared i’d like to point out that most of season 1,2 was more focused on sam and his physic abilities -that was a gr8t storyline . i think that both brothers have had equal share of the story lines and i hope the guys will continue the great stories that supernatural have to offer ! love you both equally x x
