The Evolution Of Metallica’s Logo

Metallica patch

Every band that wants to make an impact on their fans, not only through music but through their album art needs a good logo or mascot. Megadeth has Vic Rattlehead, Iron Maiden has Eddie, The Misfits have The Crimson Ghost and etc. Over the years sometimes these logos and mascots evolve through better artwork and technology. Some bands stay with what works while others make changes to keep it interesting.

Metallica is one of those bands that has changed their logo over the years but has recently went back to the original format they used with Kill ‘Em All. Unrealityshout.com writer, Gerard McGarry recently wrote an article about the evolution of Metallica’s logo where he shows us how they went from the classic logo to the three dimensional logo, to a more blocky logo during the Load and Reload years and back to the classic logo with their latest release, Death Magnetic.

I think that most fans appreciate the original logo, to include the more 3d version than it’s later predecessor and were happy to see it once again on Death Magnetic.

Check out Gerard’s article on the evolution of Metallica’s logo at Unrealityshout.com.

In other Metallica news, Metallica have posted the video for Broken, Beaten and Scarred at Metallica.com. Broken, Beaten and Scarred is the latest single from Death Magnetic and can be purchased as a digipak coming on April 3rd…but why?

The one i like the most is the one used on Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning.

They are back to the roots for good: musically and graphically! Usually, I do not like status quo but for me, the logo on the Kill Em All album is aggressive, Simple and original. It is part of their brand identity. It was a good marketing decision to return to that version.
