Places Directory is an application built by a Google engineer based in Taipei who traveled frequently to Mountain View California to help in locating places in a small category. I could relate as every time I am in the United States I wish I could just quickly locate certain shops out of a mobile device instead of going through pages and pages of internet to get to where I need to. Anyways, the Google engineer and his colleagues decided to dedicate 20% of their time to build the application, “places directory”. Once they have completed the app they have uploaded and launched it on the Android market as a Google Labs product.
Places Directory allows you to browse nearby places in the following categories: Restaurants, Movie Theaters, Hotels and Banks. Alongside the listing of the places, you are also given the distance, and direction to the place by tapping on the list on a short-press. Ratings and photos are also included and you can also call the business via a long-press on the listing. The location provided can also be viewed through GoogleMaps. This app uses GPS or the nearest cell tower to provide you with these locations.
The Places Directory application is only available in US English and Chinese. Go ahead and download the application via the Android Market.
If you travel a lot or just need direction, this is a good tool be installed on your Android device.
