Even if you don’t know who Frank Martin is, you would certainly recognize his face. He’s the notorious Kansas St. coach who is frequently seen on ESPN college basketball highlights for his temper tantrums.
Seriously, this guy looks as though he’s about to blow a gasket in every clip. The worst part is that he has an excuse for acting like a manic.
“That’s not a show I put on during the course of a game,” Martin said on ESPN.com. “That’s me challenging them nonstop all the time to get them to understand that they cannot get rattled. It’s about preparing kids for life. It’s about preparing them to succeed.”
Just what exactly is he preparing kids for by berating them, slapping them on the wrist (which was also shown on ESPN) and showing absolutely no restraint whatsoever? He seems more like an overbearing and emotionally abusive parent rather than a college basketball coach.
Frank Martin basically needs to chill. If he doesn’t learn how to control his temper in a constructive manner, we could easily have another Bob Knight incident on our hands. And Martin hardly has the kind of reputation that Knight had as a head coach, so I highly doubt that he’d be able to shake off the consequences and repercussions as easily.
If Martin hits a kid on national television, his coaching career is through. Hopefully, he’ll realize the error of his ways before something like that occurs.
