In the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Lakers are the measuring stick. With that in mind, the new-look Dallas Mavericks have to be thrilled with the results on Wednesday. In a close contest, the Mavs outlasted the Lakers and won by a final score of 101-96.
Although the newly acquired Caron Butler was out due to an allergic reaction, the newly acquired center did good work. In 39 minutes, Brendan Haywood had 11 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots. He also helped limit Andrew Bynum to 10 points — more than five points below his average.
The big stars for Dallas on the night were Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry. Nowitzki led the way with 31 points and nine rebounds, while Terry had 30 points, three rebounds and three assists.
The Lakers, per usual, were led by Kobe Bryant, however the superstar didn’t have a very good game. He scored 20 points but missed 14-of-23 field goal attempts.
With the win, the Mavs retain their spot atop the Southwest Division with a record of 37-21. The 43-15 Lakers are still comfortably atop the Western Conference standings, even with the loss.
