Martin Kraymer won the PGA Championship — but that’s not what will be remembered. Instead, Dustin Johnson’s blunder will be what is talked about when thinking back on this tournament. The mistake kept Johnson out of a playoff and a erased his chance of winning the PGA Championship.
Ouch.
On the 18th fairway, Johnson put his 4-iron on the ground behind the ball. One problem: he was technically in a sand trap … and you can’t ground a club in a bunker. That penalty cost him two strokes and knocked him out of the playoff.
Instead, Kaymer and Bubba Watson entered the playoff. Kaymer, a 25-year-old out of Germany, ended up with the trophy in his hands when all was said and done. After the tournament, even Kaymer felt sorry for Johnson.
Said Kaymer: “It was very tough to see what is a bunker and what is not a bunker. I think it’s very sad he got two penalty strokes. He played great golf. He’s a very nice guy.”
Johnson will now have to live the rest of his life thinking about what could have been.
