With first place in the AL East on the line, one of the veteran New York Yankees came up clutch. Jorge Posada, the longtime catcher for the Yankees, hit a pinch-hit homer in the 10th inning to give New York a victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. With the 8-7 win, the Yankees now hold a half-game lead over the Rays in the division.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi didn’t try to downplay the meaning of Posada’s home run.
Said Girardi: “That’s a huge home run for us. On a road trip where we’ve had some real disappointing losses, that’s a huge, huge win.”
Prior to this win, the Yankees had lost four straight games and seven of their last eight.
“It’s big. Any win is big. This one feels like it was never going to come,” said Mariano Rivera, who picked up his 30th save on the season.
The Yankees and Rays play again on Wednesday. The winner will be in first place in the AL East.
