The NFL has two star wide receivers named Steve Smith. The league may soon be down to one after the Steve Smith on the Carolina Panthers suffered a gruesome ankle injury. After the game, Smith was seen with an air cast on his ankle. Rumblings indicate that he may have a high ankle sprain. If that’s true, Smith will be out at least a few weeks with the ankle injury.

In the contest between the Panthers and the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints, Smith was injured in the third quarter. He caught a short pass, ran for five yards and then got hurt while being tackled. He laid on the field for a while and needed help to the sidelines. Smith was then carted to the locker room.

“I’m just going to try to walk to the plane without too much pain,” said Smith, “and see how it feels in the morning.”

Smith finished the game with two catches for 11 yards. His Panthers ended up losing the game 16-14 and could very well have also lost their star wide receiver.
