Shawne Merriman used to be a feared NFL linebacker. In his first two seasons, Merriman had 27 sacks and looked headed to a Hall of Fame career. However, during his second season, Merriman was busted for taking steroids. As it turns out, those steroids were what powered Merriman to stardom. He’s never been the same since getting busted.
Nicknamed “Lights Out”, it appears as if the lights may be out on his NFL at the age of 26. Over the last three seasons, Merriman has played in just 18 games. During that time, he has just four sacks. He’s not nearly as big, fast or strong as he used to be. So, yeah, it’s not too difficult to connect the dots.
Earlier this season, the Chargers thought so little of the post-steroids version of Merriman that they waived him. After being claimed on waiver by the Buffalo Bills, Merriman made it all of 15 minutes in practice before getting re-injured. This week, the Bills decided to put Merriman on IR. They, too, found out the hard way that Merriman just isn’t the same player since getting busted for steroids.
