The 2011 AL MVP is a close race. However, the 2011 AL Cy Young award winner is clear. The only question is whether or not he will win both the Cy Young and the MVP award. Here’s our top five pitchers in the American League including the 2011 AL Cy Young Award winner.

5. Josh Beckett, Boston Red Sox
Josh Beckett was higher on this list until he totally collapsed in September — like the rest of the Red Sox.

4. James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays
This year, James Shields proved to be one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. He uses pitching know-how to get outs.

3. Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels
It was another fantastic season for Jered Weaver. His stats were impressive for virtually the entire season.

2. CC Sabathia, New York Yankees
The Yankees would be dead without CC Sabathia. He’s the leader of the pitching staff and gives New York a chance each and every start.

1. Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers
Justin Verlander led the AL in wins, ERA, WHIP and strikeouts. If he doesn’t win the 2011 AL Cy Young Award it would be more shocking than that Dan Johnson homer last night.
