The Portland Trail Blazers shocked JJ Hickson when they claimed the young bigman off of waivers. Hickson was waived by the Sacramento Kings after the two sides agreed to a contract buyout. While Hickson wanted to sign a free agent deal with the Golden State Warriors, the Blazers jumped in and snagged him before he become free to sign with other teams.
The Blazers traded away Marcus Camby and Gerald Wallace, so they could use depth at power forward and center. Hickson, back when he was with the Cleveland Cavaliers, was thought to have good potential. He struggled with the Kings this season but he’s still only 23-year-old.
As for the Warriors, this was a tough blow. They were about to land an interesting bigman for a cheap contract. Instead, they missed out to a conference rival.
Right now, Hickson probably isn’t thrilled. But if he gets minutes, he won’t be unhappy.
