Most of the firings on Black Monday made sense. Bad teams fired bad coaches and ineffective general managers. However, one firing made no sense at all: the Chicago Bears firing Lovie Smith. Smith had just led the Bears to a 10-6 season and narrowly missed the postseason.
Sure, the Bears collapsed after starting 7-1 but he wasn’t the only one to blame. Injuries really hurt the team and they had some other unfortunate breaks. Plus, Smith’s steady force helped Chicago get to 7-1 in the first place.
The Bears will now probably get worse. In a few years, I bet they will wish they would have kept Lovie Smith.
