Doug Collins is no longer the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers. The legendary coach has decided to retire. The 61-year-old said he wanted to spend more time with his family — especially his five grandchildren.
The good news for the Sixers is that he won’t be going away completely. Instead, Collins has agreed to become a consultant for the next five years. In fact, he will help the Sixers select their next head coach.
After making the playoffs last season and then beating the No. 1 seed Chicago Bulls in the playoffs, the Sixers slumped this year. They were just 34-48 — a full four games outside of the playoff picture.
It’s not yet known if Collins will go back to his television gig. He’s regarded as one of the best basketball color commentators of all time.
