Vinny Del Negro has been fired as the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers. He led the Clippers to arguably their best season in franchise history — but apparently that wasn’t enough to keep his job. So, who will replace Del Negro on the sidelines for the Clippers? Here are our top four candidates:
1. Phil Jackson
Can the Zen Master really turn down a return to Los Angeles where he can go toe-to-toe with the Lakers for the city’s bragging rights? Add in Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and the other talented players on their roster — and this looks like a perfect opportunity for Jackson to return to the NBA.
2. Jeff Van Gundy
The Clippers have the pieces to be an outstanding offensive team. However, to win a championship, they’ll need to become elite on the defensive end. That’s where Van Gundy would come in. He could install a defense that would take the Clippers to the next level.
3. Lionel Hollins
The current head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies is a free agent after the season. If the Grizzlies don’t make a quick move to bring him back, he’d be a hot commodity. And you can bet he has the Clippers respect after his Grizzlies beat L.A. in the first round.
4. Mike Budenholzer
Of all the assistant coaches in the NBA, the head assistant for Gregg Popovich in San Antonio is probably the most well-respected. Would he really leave the Spurs for the Clippers? Los Angeles may very well tempt him with a lucrative offer.
