Originally released in 1998, Fallout 2 is a post-apocalyptic adventure set in the radioactive wastes of California and Nevada. You’re the Chosen One tasked with retrieving a Garden of Eden Creation Kit, or GECK, to save your home village of Arroyo. Along the way, you’ll meet mutated animals, sleazy drug dealers, rotting ghouls and everything in between.
Why it’s great: There’s no such thing as a wrong way to play Fallout 2. Want to go through the game as a smooth-talking scientist? A brutish hulk with single-digit IQ? A sneaky martial arts expert? Fallout 2 supports many different play styles with its flexible skill system, and the developers did a fantastic job of making each character viable in one way or another. Almost every quest has a surprising amount of solutions catered to different character concepts.
Things to know: Fallout 2′s devoted cult following has produced a wide array of mods that make the game even better. The Fallout 2 Restoration Project adds back into the game all of the content that Black Isle had to cut to ship the game on time, so it’s well worth your attention.
