The Los Angeles Clippers decision to trade a first round pick to land Doc Rivers was a great move for the franchise moving forward.
The biggest boost is it gives the entire franchise an air of legitimacy. Doc Rivers is considered to be the second best coach in the NBA and his presence immediately stabilizes the Clips. He’s likable and smart which will help both in personnel moves and on the court decisions.
The Clippers previously had Vinny Del Negro but Del Negro’s pedigree was always up for questioning. Rivers has a championship under his belt and if the Clips go south, the blame will be on the players rather than him.
Another reason to laud the move is it helps the Clippers pitch to free agent Chris Paul. Paul is exploring his options in the free agent market but with an elite coach now at the helm, the Clippers have to look more attractive.
As far as the other Clippers star, Doc Rivers will also help develop Blake Griffin’s game and better utilize his strengths.
Losing a first round pick as compensation for Doc is nothing when you consider all the benefits he brings to the table. Once Chris Paul re-ups, the Clippers will become legitimate contenders in the Western Conference.
