Most of the free agent publicity is centered around Dwight Howard right now but imagine 2014 when LeBron James becomes a free agent. The buzz could be electric if LeBron leaves the door open — and I think he will.
LeBron has already won two titles in three seasons with the Miami Heat so there’s nothing left for him to prove in South Florida. Despite being the current champions, it’s clear the Heat are in the decline. The King is carrying much more of the load than he originally anticipated as Dwyane Wade’s old age and injuries have slowed him considerably and Chris Bosh has morphed more into a role player rather than a third player in Miami’s Big Three.
So if LeBron leaves, where will he go? The Lakers look like they might have a shot.
One reason is they have the requisite amount of cap room to offer James a max deal. After taking less with the Heat, LeBron is done giving out discounts. Secondly, and perhaps most important, LeBron will have the spotlight shining right in his face in LA. He’ll be the center of attention for the entire NBA season. Third, the Lakers always attract top level free agents and aren’t afraid to go over the cap to compete for titles so LeBron never has to worry about getting help.
I think LeBron will mildly shock the world and head to LA for 2014.
