Not to be confused with Firaxis’s 2012 XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which was an excellent game in its own right, X-Com: UFO Defense was released in 1994 and still reigns as the best strategy game of all time. You play as the leader of X-Com, an organization that is dedicated to combating the alien threat that has started to cause devastation on earth. After deciding where to place your headquarters, you’re tasked with defending the entire planet from all manner of extraterrestrial threats.
X-Com features several layers of gameplay that make it outstanding. There’s the strategic level, where you have to manage your funding in order to buy the soldiers, weapons, and infrastructure you need to do your job. There’s also the tactical combat system, in which you control your soldiers on the ground in turn-based fashion as they clear downed UFOs and invaded cities. Eventually, you’ll climb the tech ladder far enough to take the fight to the aliens’ home planet and end the threat once and for all. X-Com is a fantastic achievement that no other strategy game has managed to equal.
