It seems like everyone has a theory for what best treats a hangover but one real study has given us a much more credible answer: Sprite. Yes, the lemon-lime soda can be good for more than just quenching your thirst!

According to a study published in the September 2013 issue of Food and Function, the carbonated beverage can do a lot to make you feel better the morning after consuming alcohol.

The reason for this lies in what actually causes hangovers. The liver processes alcohol and creates several chemical byproducts including acetaldehyde, the culprit responsible for making you feel like crap.

Alcohol also can cause the body to produce more urine which, according to the Mayo Clinic, contributes to dehydration and leads to irritate of the stomach, decreased blood sugar and headaches (due to expanded blood vessels).

During the study, researchers examined the possibilities for decreasing the presence of acetaldehyde in the body by making it turn into acetate (which helps recovery) more quickly.

They tested an amazing 57 different drinks, ranging from hemp-seed beverages to teas and sodas. Incredibly, the herbal teas actually slowed down the healing process whereas Sprite and soda water sped things up.

Hmmm… I wonder what would happen if you consumed Sprite with your booze instead of just the day after.  Maybe I’ll email the research team and suggest that for their next study.

This is great advertising for Sprite. Are we sure they didn’t pay for the study?

I use a new product called NormaLyte. Every time I feel like crap after a long night, this is what I drink. I feel a lot better quickly.
