Although he’s blaming an episode of schizophrenia, I want to believe that Thamsanqa Jantjie is a world class troll. This guy went on stage during the Nelson Mandela memorial and faked his way through being able to sign language. Instead of a legit interpretation, he was reportedly just making random movements.

Look below for 9 animates pictures of Thamsanqa Jantjie as he’s trying to fake it until he made it. The fake interpreter GIFs are hilarious with what we now know.

Personally, it didn’t strike me as odd when watching it live. He was believable enough with his sign language. Was he trolling? Was it a product of mental illness? Was he under qualified? We may never know.

In the meantime, check out these images. Be sure you hit the right arrow to view the whole funny gallery:

Schitzophrenia is a good excuse, but I think it was a straight up troll job.

It didn’t strike you as odd? He only had about four different moves, and they don’t even look much like sign language. I don’t understand sign language or Chinese, but I knew that wasn’t sign language the same way I know that somebody saying bababababababababababababababababa isn’t Chinese.

Apparently this guy has done this at other places in South Africa. I think he’s a scammer who was too stupid to stay off camera during a worldwide broadcast.

Thank God he wasn’t Al-Queda or someone who intended to harm all the heads of state he was close enough to change the world.

A key element of any sign language is a vivid facial expression.

Plus, his hands are all over the place. If I recall correctly, signs are confined to an area near the speaker’s face, to make it easier for the listener to focus and lip read when possible.

It’s the typical case of a corrupt government hiring people because they have friends in high places, where I’m from they are called Gnocchi (Like the food).
