‘Tis the season to be cheesy. While you might avoid syrupy tales throughout the year, the holiday season is one time when it’s okay to indulge in some lighter fare.
It’s hard to go wrong with Tom Hanks and it’s even more promising to have him take on the role of Mr. Walt Disney. It doesn’t get much more magical and festival than that. If you throw in Emma Thompson who is known for many films including the Harry Potter series and Nanny McPhee, you’ve got the makings for a great holiday movie.
Directed by John Lee Hancock, the film tells the story of author P.L. Travers (Thompson) as she negotiates the rights for Mary Poppins with Walt Disney in 1961. Due to the personal nature of her work, Travers is understandably protective of how it is portrayed. Along the way, we learn more about her difficult childhood in Queensland, Australia through flashbacks to 1907. While in California with Disney, Travers reflects on her life with her father, the inspiration for the story’s patriarch, Mr. Banks.
The film also stars Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman, Bradley Whitford and Colin Farrell. Saving Mr. Banks is in theaters now.
