The good people at Paramount Pictures sent me a copy of Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa and I’m really glad they did. I wasn’t able to get to the theaters to see it and, as a longtime Jackass fan, I was really disappointed to have missed my chance at viewing it on the big screen.

The plot follows 86-year-old grandfather, Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville), who must travel to North Carolina to reunite his 8-year-old grandson, Billy (Jackson Nicoll), with his father after the boy’s mother is sent to jail.

People may incorrectly assume that the affiliation with the Jackass franchise will translate into a shallow, frivolous film but Bad Grandpa includes some moments of surprising depth.

Viewers will laugh (and cringe) at the sight of Irving’s old man balls and enjoy the shocked looks on the faces of the people who watch the crazy interactions between him and his grandson but there are also scenes that will make you stop and think.

Without giving away any spoilers, it is extremely interesting to observe the behavior of the people they meet during their journey. You might be surprised by the people who are most harsh and those who are most kind and helpful, particularly in dealing with a small child on his own.

Young Jackson Nicoll, though, steals the show in this movie by delivering a believable and daring performance. Of particular note is his willingness to dress up as a girl and crash a beauty pageant. You won’t believe your eyes when it gets to the talent competition.

Overall, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa is definitely worth seeing. Check out this trailer for an idea of what to expect:
