Japan finished the 2014 Winter Olympics with just one gold medal. The team also tallied four silver and three bronze for a total of eight medals in Sochi.
The sole gold medal came in figure skating… and it wasn’t pretty or dominating. Yuzuru Hanyu fell on his opening jump (a quad salchow) in the men’s free skate figure skating final. Then, he fell again! This time on a triple flip.
With any kind of competition, that would leave him in the dust, right? Well not so fast. Canada’s Patrick Chan turned in a three-error performance to finish in second, handing over the watered-down top prize to the Japanese skater.
