It took almost a decade but Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues was finally released as the sequel to the 2004 hit, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. With such a huge gap between the films, one might expect that the ensemble cast may have lost some of its chemistry but they’d be wrong. If anything, they seemed even more comfortable with each other.
Director, Adam McKay, and producer, Judd Apatow, returned for the follow-up that was co-written by McKay and star, Will Ferrell. Released in theaters on December 18, 2013, it was the last film Paramount will ever distribute containing 35mm film since they switched to full digital for their next release, The Wolf of Wall Street. In that way, Anchorman 2 will always be a little part of cinematic history.
The plot follows Ron Burgundy (Ferrell), San Diego’s top rated newsman, who, after an upset at the network saw his co-anchor wife, Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), push him out of the spotlight, agrees to help launch the nation’s first 24-hour news channel. Joined by weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), man on the street Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd) and sports guy Champ Kind (David Koechner), things get predictably out of hand.
The cast is round out by Meagan Good, James Marsden, Kristen Wiig, Fred Willard, Chris Parnell, Dylan Baker, Greg Kinnear, Josh Lawson and Harrison Ford. There are, of course, a ton of cameos but I won’t spoil the surprises for you.
The movie, itself, was really entertaining and Rotten Tomatoes actually ranked the sequel higher (74%) than the original (66%). If nothing else, it’s worth watching this movie for what happens in the last 10-15 minutes. It’s ridiculous, it’s sometimes offensive, it’s hilarious and it’s surprising. If you are looking for some laughs, definitely consider checking out Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.
