The second month of summer blockbusters is upon us but with so many advertisements cluttering up our television screens, it can be hard to keep track of what comes out when. To make it easier, we’ve compiled a list of movies that hit theaters this month.
Wednesday July 2
Deliver Us from Evil - Honestly, this movie, which is based on the real-life cases of retired NYPD cop Ralph Sarchie, looks extremely creepy. Combine unexplained scary events in New York City with a Castilian/Hungarian priest working to solve the crimes with the cops and you’ve got something truly terrifying. Even Eric Bana, who portrays Sarchie in the movie, couldn’t sleep for three weeks after he watched actual footage from the cases.
Earth to Echo - In what seems like a bit of a mix between ET and Super 8, this movie tells the tale of four childhood friends who must work together to help a tiny stranded alien who is trying to make his way home.
Tammy – In a role very similar to all of her others, Melissa McCarthy plays the ridiculous overweight woman who struggles with basic social skills. In this film, she robs a fast food restaurant in desperation after losing her job and her husband (who she discovered was cheating). To escape it all, she embarks on a road-trip with her alcoholic grandmother who seems like more of a bad influence than anything else.
Friday July 11
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – Some people are pretty excited about this second installment in the newest reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise. This plot follows the epic battle between humans and apes as one race attempts to emerge as Earth’s dominant species. Of course, Caesar and his genetically evolved apes will not go down without a fight.
The Fluffy Movie – If you enjoy comedian, Gabriel Iglesias, you will want to see this movie that contains footage from his stand-up shows shows in San Jose, California on February 28 and March 1, 2014.
Friday July 18
Sex Tape – This movie has the potential to be pretty good and possibly slightly raunchy. Cameron Diaz and Jason Segal star as a couple who, after years of togetherness, need to spruce up their non-existent sex life. When she suggests they make a sex tape, he’s all for it and after hours of recording themselves, she reminds him to erase the video but he forgets – and accidentally sends it to all of their friends and family.
The Purge: Anarchy - If the first movie taught us anything it’s that the annual purge is a dangerous thing and, even if you take all of the precautions, you can still be at risk if someone truly wants to hurt you. In this sequel, a young couple’s car breaks down in the middle of their city just as the 12-hour period of lawlessness begins. As easy prey, can they manage to survive till morning?
Friday July 25
Hercules - If you’re looking for animated heroes and backup singers, you’ve chosen the wrong version of this movie. Instead, this rendition stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the title role as a Greek demigod who must defeat a tyrannical warlord at the request of the King of Thrace and his daughter.
Lucy – Scarlett Johansson is hottest when she’s in a powerful role and it doesn’t get more intense than portraying Lucy, a young woman who gets caught in the middle of a bad deal and ends up becoming a merciless mercenary after her brain quickly evolves beyond what we currently understand. Hell hath no fury.
