Summer isn’t just about taking layers of clothes off – it’s about putting the right clothes on.
We consulted some experts – and the runways – in an attempt to discover the must-have wardrobe essentials for summer. There’s some exciting things happening in men’s fashion – so get out your credit card and let’s start planning!
Yes, shorter is better this summer when it comes to jackets and pants. “But the fit has to be spot-on. Start with the shoulders and work your way down,” says Shari Barnett is the lead wardrobe designer/creative director at Productions Plus – The Talent Shop, a leading national talent agency with a unique-to-industry full-service wardrobe department.
Khakis are a longtime staple. “They mix well with so many vibrant colors, like nectarine, violets and various shades of blue,” says Barnett.
These pants are big right now, but the trend will last. Barnett says these are really easy to coordinate with various looks, incorporating pieces from casual tees to dressier jackets.
Windbreakers are back big in bold brights. “Upscale the trend with this bodacious blue suede from Ermenegildo Zegna. Or if that’s not on your pocketbook menu, try this retro ’70s retro item from NY Fashion City, “ says Luke Reichle, costume designer on ABC’s Castle and founder of SecretsOfTheRedCarpet.com.
Reichle says it’s a gun show on the streets this summer. Get your biceps pumped and work the trend in tanks like this technical print from Ink n Burn.
What’s black and white and hot all over? Reichle says it’s the new graphic sweaters burning up the market for summer, like this banded boatneck item from Burberry Prorsum.
Don’t be afraid of white pants! Just make sure the fit and cut are excellent (and stick with flat-front).
Try more texture
Add interest to your wardrobe with fabrics like whipcord, linen, bamboo and seersucker. They are cool and comfortable, and add texture. This linen suit is also a great example of the shorter-cut pant trend.
With more glam for the gams, this new length for men’s shorts is all over the stores. This Greco print pair from Dolce and Gabbana gets the job done.
Brightly colored sneakers add an element of fun and irreverence that men can get away with in the summertime. These sneakers from Saks are incredible and take the trend to the extreme, while this Urban Outfitters pair are a more subtle version of the trend (and are offered at a more affordable price-point.
If you are going to pick up one trend this summer, make the bandana your friend. They can be found in every price range. “My favorites come from the Army surplus store near me,” says Reichle.
