We haven’t heard from Micheal Phelps in a while. However, early this morning he was arrested for DUI in Baltimore, Maryland. According to TMZ, he was pulled over at around 1:40 a.m. for going 84 MPH in a 45 MPH zone. If that wasn’t dangerous enough, apparently Phelps was drunk too.

Phelps failed the field sobriety test and his blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit. Authorities say that Phelps was charged with driving under the influence, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lanes. He was booked and later released.

This was Phelps second DUI arrest. The first one came 11 years ago, also in Maryland, back in 2004 when he was just 19 years old. Back then, he served no jail time and got 18 months probation. With so many years between the two incidents, I’d expect he gets probation again this time too.

You might also remember in 2009 when a photo was floating around the internet of Phelps hitting a marijuana pipe. For that, he was suspended by USA Swimming from competition for three months.

Phelps still remains the most decorated Olympian in history. He won 22 medals at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics. He retired in 2012, but early this year Phelps announced he was back to training. Hopefully this DUI won’t ruin his comeback chances, but he really needs to stay off the streets if he’s going to drink and drive.

he conquered the world in his teens. not justifying his bad behavior, but just saying he must be seeking adrenaline and partying in any way he can, now that his life goals are basically set in stone. seriously, what is he going to be doing when he’s 40? i’d be surprised if his iq is as high as 95… he doesn’t have the brains for broadcasting or writing books– the ghost writer thing won’t actually be him doing anything.

all i could see is coaching, and i presume that is way beneath him… and it probably is.

all that said, going that fast on a common street is ridiculously dangerous when sober, let alone twice the limit. others have gotten jail time for going that much faster than the speed limit alone. tack on the being drunk, he’d be lucky to get probation.
