Halloween is right around the corner, and you know what that means? It’s time to watch some seriously disturbing horror flicks. Some nights, a regular movie viewing experience just won’t do. We watch some films purely out of morbid curiosity; to see limits pushed; to blow our minds; to make sure we are still human. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill slasher movies or your typical psychological thrillers. These are some of the most unsettling horror films ever made.

    Maniac
This remake of the 1980 film of the same name stars Elijah Wood as a severely disturbed serial killer who makes women into his own mannequins. There is something particularly haunting about the correlation between the character’s innocent, childlike facade coupled with his brutal actions. And it’s all wrapped within the framework of Wood’s unexpectedly good horror acting chops. The gimmick here is actually part of what the makes Maniac so compelling and disturbing – a first-person perspective from the view of the serial killer, maintained throughout almost the entire film.
