A transgender 17-year-old committed suicide on Sunday by walking out in front of a tractor trailer on highway I-71 in Warren County, Ohio. Leelah Alcorn (born Joshua) left a suicide note on Tumblr, placing much of the blame on her devout Christian parents. The note, which can be read in its entirety below, says Leelah’s parents reacted negatively and refused to allow her to transition. Leelah says that she felt like a girl trapped in a boy’s body since she was 4 years old, and she warns other parents not to treat their children how she was allegedly treated.

The suicide note was posted shortly after Alcorn’s death, along with another Tumblr post entitled, “Sorry.” In the second post, the Kings Mill teen wrote to his two sisters, Amanda and Tiffany, and brother, Justin, with love. But to her parents, Leelah wrote: “Fuck you. You can’t just control other people like that. That’s messed up.”

On her Facebook page, the teen’s mother — Carla Wood Alcorn — posted a message about her child’s death, but referenced Alcorn as her “son” and made no mention of suicide.

“My sweet 16 year old son, Joshua Ryan Alcorn went home to heaven this morning. He was out for an early morning walk and was hit by a truck. Thank you for the messages and kindness and concern you have sent our way. Please continue to keep us in your prayers.”

Additionally, the local media in the area also reported the death using Alcorn’s birth name — Joshua. Though later, WCPO.com added an update to their story stated that Leelah was transgender and committed suicide.

Many in the LGBT community are outraged by the apparent disregard for Leelah’s desire to be identified as a girl. A Facebook group his been started — “Justice for Leelah Alcorn.”

I grew up in an oppressive religious household and it makes all sorts of things difficult. This is a tremendous loss and far too typical. Leelah – you wanted to be remembered, and you will be. You will be counted amongst victims of fear and hate, and your grave insistence on being yourself is a brave victory, despite the tragic outcome.

I’m Christian, and I could NEVER do this to my own flesh and blood. Where do these people get off thinking rhey are better than others because they are Christian? I have friends and family from all walks of life, and I love them the way they are. Don’t blame it on religion. I can assure you not ALL Christians are the same. To me, God is the judge, and the God I am saved by is compassionate amd loves humans. He wants to be with us, or he wouldn’t have sent his son to die for our sins. I am sure God understands and has welcomed her with open arms. Imagine how happy she is. As for her parents, they need to seriously re evaluate their lives, and I pray the God has mercy in their souls, and they enjoy eternity burning in hell for being so judgmental. Don’t be the sinner to throw the last stone. This is what Jesus said when he protected Mary M. from being stoned to death for being a porsitute. May this young lady rest in peace. I hope you fly high and have all of the joys Heaven can bring, and you feel whole in God’s house! Amen!
