The year is ending and, now, we can look back to see which stars appeared in the best-performing films and surprise, surprise, Jennifer Lawrence has topped the list.
This past year, she starred in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Unless, you’ve been asleep for months, you know that these were both huge films. The end result is that the 24-year-old Oscar-winner has been named the highest-grossing actor of 2014 with a total of $1.4 billion at the box-office.
Chris Pratt, who brought in $1.2 billion due to the combine successes of Guardians of the Galaxy and The LEGO Movie, came in second place.
So here’s the thing - Mockingjay and X-Men were both great films driven by decent ensemble casts. Sure, she was Mystique (a major, major role) in the Marvel film but she was far from the star of the movie. Really, the most captivating thing (aside from the killer effects and makeup) was the relationship between Professor X and Magneto.
Now, I need to be blunt and honest about Mockingjay. Yes, Katniss Everdeen is the driving force behind that story line but did you see the movie? Were you truly bowled over by her acting? It was one-dimensional, monotonous and almost comical at times. In one scene, she’s trying to convince us that she’s scared and I could not stop laughing. I don’t know if I was just in a bad mood that day but everyone that saw it with me felt the same way.
Am I gunning for Ms. Lawrence? Absolutely not. I just really hate titles like “highest-grossing” because people were going to see Mockingjay and X-Men no matter what. Why not make this the “highest-grossing screenwriter” or “director” list every year? Those are the people truly responsible for the quality of the movie. I could go on and on. What do you think? Is Jennifer Lawrence deserving? Did her leaked nude photos help her cause? Am I being too cranky? Are we giving recognition to the wrong people?
