In a brazen act, a man was on top of and allegedly raping an unconscious woman outdoors along a Stanford campus street in Palo Alto early in the morning on Jan. 18. Fortunately, two bicyclists came upon the horrible scene and stopped the sexual assault.

The accused rapist is a freshman standout on the university’s swim team — 19-year-old Brock Allen Turner of Ohio. He tried to flee the scene but the two good Samaritans stopped him and held him down until police arrived. The victim (who was not a student) was apparently intoxicated and unconscious during the rape. She was taken to a local hospital.

The charges against the three-time All-American high school swimmer are steep. Turner was charged with raping an unconscious person, raping an intoxicated person, sexual penetration with a foreign object and assault while attempting to commit rape. He faces up to 10 years in prison, if convicted. And if he was actually raping an unconscious woman, he deserves every minute of those 10 years. He’s currently out on bond after posting $150,000 bail.
