A federal judge has granted Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s request to block President Obama’s executive amnesty order. Gov. Abbott filed the suit back in December on behalf of Texas and 25 other states that were opposed to the executive action. The order that was proposed by the Obama administration would grant benefits and defer deportation for up to 5 million undocumented immigrants.
Abbott took to Twitter late on Monday to break the news.

The injunction was issued by US District Judge Andrew S. Hanen. The temporary halt cites a failure by Obama and the White House to comply with a law about how the feds must establish regulations. Hanen stopped short of declaring the executive action unconstitutional, but said that legal questions surrounding the action need to be settled before it takes effect.
Abbott later made a statement to the press about the judge’s decision.
“President Obama abdicated his responsibility to uphold the United States Constitution when he attempted to circumvent the laws passed by Congress via executive fiat, and Judge Hanen’s decision rightly stops the president’s overreach in its tracks. We live in a nation governed by a system of checks and balances, and the President’s attempt to by-pass the will of the American people was successfully checked today.”
The part of the program that expanded protections for people who were brought into the country illegally when they were children was set to start accepting applications on Wednesday with other parts of the program that include protections for for parents of U.S. citizens and permanent residents expected to start in May.
Whether you agree or disagree with the contents of Obama’s executive order, you have to applaud Gov. Abbott for filing the suit and Judge Hanen for issuing the temporary injunction. There are too many questions surrounding the immigration issue that need to be hashed out before such a drastic, sweeping order goes into effect in our country. And more importantly, no matter how powerful Obama thinks he is, he has no right to by-pass one of the primary systems that our nation was founded on. Monday night was a tremendous win not just for Abbott or the Republicans but for the Constitution. Obama can’t be pleased.
