Call it summer blockbuster madness. Call it a guilty pleasure. I don’t care what anyone says, I loved the first two Bad Boys movies starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Haters can hate all they want but the box-office suggests that audiences loved the movies too. Now, it looks like we might actually get a third installment but with a huge change.

As much as Micheal Bay annoys me, the idea of having a Bad Boys movie without him at the helm makes me nervous. He perfectly captured the chemistry between his main stars while delivering a stylish, flashy movie that was as rich with comedy as it was action. That’s not really easy to do.
Now that rumors about the project are heating up, it looks like Sony has found a possible successor to Bay. It’s being reported that the studio is in “early talks” with Joe Carnahan to take over the directing duties and he’d also have to do a revision on David Guggenheim’s script. That’s a LOT of trust. Carnahan is the man behind The Grey, The A-Team, Smokin’ Aces and Narc. I don’t know if there’s enough there to suggest that he can handle this type of movie.
Right now, this is all in the talking stage but we all know how quickly things can go from zero to sixty in Hollywood these days. Just a few overzealous texts or emails between people and suddenly something gets a green light when it should have been canned.
Deadline suggests that ”this is all moving quickly as the studio wants to have the movie for Will Smith to consider as his next slot after Suicide Squad.” That’s great and all but Smith hasn’t exactly been cranking out the hits recently (let’s not even talk about After Earth). Is it really smart to be lining up his projects like this is 2001?
Also, there hasn’t really been any mention of Martin Lawrence returning which, of course, would be another bad thing. Without Bay or Lawrence, why not just make this an all-new buddy cop movie. Cast Josh Gad opposite Smith, or something, and call it a day? If, however, Lawrence is on board, I’d have to give this a chance.
What about you? Do you think they should make another Bad Boys movie?
