The Trump campaign has launched a blistering new attack ad on presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, tearing into the former Secretary of State for allegedly not taking several key world events seriously enough. The ad becomes the latest shots fired out of the real estate mogul’s aggressive campaign, marking a departure from his attack ads on his Republican competition.
Trump’s video, which was posted Monday on Instagram, begins with the caption: “Hillary has been having a laugh at our expense for years.” The video then cuts to a number of magazine covers and news headlines overlaid over clips of Clinton happily laughing. Time Magazine’s “The Truth About Whitewater” and “Hard Times for Hillary Covers” are shown in the video while she smiles in the background.
“FBI expands probe of Clinton emails, launches independent classification review,” reads a quote from the State Department, followed by a shot of a New York Post cover that reads, “Deleter of the Free World: Hillary reveals that she erased 30,000 e-mails.”
The last clip depicts Clinton laughing during her October testimony to the House committee on Benghazi responsible for investigating the deadly 2012 attack on the American Embassy in Libya. Scenes from the aftermath of the attack, which show vehicles and buildings ablaze, are shown and an audio clip of Rep. Martha Roby chastising Clinton from laughing plays.
“Don’t let the joke be on us!” the video exclaims before cutting off. The ad marks a departure from Trump’s use of Instagram to knock his GOP opponents, a strategy that his campaign has deployed for a number of months in an attempt to sway his 609,000 followers. Most recently, Trump posted a video in which rival Ben Carson describes an incident where he nearly stabbed a friend with the caption, “Happy Friday the 13th.”
