People are already up in arms over the upcoming remake of Ghostbusters since it features an all-female cast. I will admit that I was a huge fan of the original back in the day, partly because I feel like Bill Murray can do no wrong. I even watched the animated show and defended the sequel.
At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about this new movie but then it really grew up me. I mean, with Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy (joined by Saturday Night Live stars, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones), it should, at least, be entertaining.
With any movie in this vein, there is a video game in the works and I’m curious about who will play this. On the one hand, if they do it right, it could be the perfect combination of cartoonish creepiness to make it a must-have for mature and younger players alike but… will the female characters be a problem?
Of course, this shouldn’t be a question at all but, unfortunately, that’s the world we live in. Sure, female-led games like Tomb Raider were really popular but that’s mostly due to the fact that Lara Croft was designed to wear tight clothing and anytime she stood still, she breathed so heavily that her breasts heaved up and down. Wiig, McCarthy, McKinnon and Jones have realistic body types so I doubt they will be programmed in the same way.
PLUS… there’s this whole controversy about Rey from Star Wars. Even though she’s the main star and a complete badass, most of the action figure and toy sets did not include her. You also can’t play as Rey in the Star Wars Monopoly game. Why? Because toy manufacturers didn’t think people would care enough about a female character.
For those interested, the game based on the Paul Feig-directed Ghostbusters will be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
