Former Saints defensive end Will Smith and his wife, Racquel, were having fun in New Orleans on Saturday night at French Quarter Fest. A short time later, Smith was dead and his wife was hospitalized.
Late on Saturday night, Smith was driving his Mercedes SUV with his wife in the passenger’s seat, following a Chevy Impala carrying two of his acquaintances. At an intersection, an orange Hummer H2 rear-ended Smith’s SUV, causing it to hit the vehicle in front of him.
Smith and the driver of the Hummer exchanged words over the incident. The male driver pulled out a handgun, shooting Smith multiple times, as well as shooting Racquel in the leg. When police arrived at the scene, Smith was partially inside his vehicle. He unfortunately died at the scene.
The driver/shooter was at the location when police arrived. The 28-year-old, identified as Cardell Hayes, has been booked on second-degree murder charges. Hayes sued the city of New Orleans back in 2005 after the police killed his father.
The 34-year-old Smith was a father of three. He was drafted as the 18th pick in the 2004 draft and went on to play 10 seasons in the NFL — all with the Saints. It does not appear that Smith knew his killer prior to the incident.
Smith posted this photo to Instagram just hours before he died.
