A shocking wrong-way crash was caught on camera in Houston, showing the terrifying finish to an addled driver’s four-minute drive on the wrong side of the highway.
The incident took place at around 4:30 am, when police claim they were notified that a Ford Mustang was spotted traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Houston’s West Loop. The city’s TranStar camera system, which lines its highways with recording devices, captured the entire incident as it unfolded.
Cars could be seen swerving out of the wrong-way driver’s path, some narrowly avoiding a potentially deadly collision. Law enforcement officers and good Samaritans alike tried to flag down the driver by parking in the opposite shoulder lane, but they were unable to get his attention.
Eventually, the driver’s good fortune ran out: the footage shows the wrong-way driver slamming into an oncoming vehicle. While pictures of the aftermath show two gruesomely mangled cars, the driver who was hit is said to be in good condition, while the wrong-way driver was conscious but bloodied.
Authorities believe that the driver was intoxicated at the time of the harrowing incident. Police shut down all of the highway’s northbound lanes as part of their investigation, fully reopening them an hour later.
