An Australian radio host has been terminated for making an incredibly tasteless joke that poked fun at the grisly fate of the four people who died at the Dreamworld theme park last week.
A malfunction in the Thunder River Rapids Ride at the Queensland amusement park resulted in four adults, two male and two female, getting stuck and fatally mangled in a wooden conveyor belt. The children of the two women witnessed their mothers’ deaths firsthand.
The nightmarish tragedy has haunted people across the world, but 7HOFM host Anna Dare apparently saw it as an opportunity for a joke. During a “secret sound” segment, listeners were asked to guess the source of a particular sound in order to win some money.
“It’s not getting stuck in the conveyor belt at a theme park, is it?” Dare said, prompting a sound of disgust from her co-host. “That’s what it sounds like to me, when I first heard it. That’s the first thing I thought of.”
The radio station’s parent company swiftly issued a statement condemning the insensitive remark and assuring that Dare had been suspended and taken off the air. It is not certain whether she will ever return to an on-air role at the station.
