According to South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, President-elect Donald Trump should look no further than Texas Senator Ted Cruz when it comes time to fill the vacant Supreme Court seat.
At a Veterans Day event in Greenville, South Carolina, Graham praised Cruz by claiming that there is “no stronger constitutional conservative.”
“I would put Ted Cruz on that list,” he said. “I would suggest that President Trump look within the Senate. There is some talent there. There is no stronger constitutional conservative than Ted Cruz.”
The remarks demonstrate an about-face on the part of Graham, who once joked: “If you killed Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial was in the Senate, nobody would convict you,” implying that Cruz was universally reviled by other lawmakers.
After Graham failed to gain traction in the Republican presidential primary contest, he ended up endorsing Cruz after much hesitation. “He’s the best alternative to Donald Trump,” Graham said at the time.
Cruz has experience working with the Supreme Court: in 1996, he served as a clerk to then-Chief Justice William Rehnquist, and during his 5-year run as the Solicitor General of Texas, Cruz successfully argued cases before the Supreme Court.
