Several weeks ago, David and Jenny Williams of Denton, Texas, called police to report an appalling hate crime: two of their vehicles had been set on fire and the phrase “n****r lovers” was written on the garage door. Just one problem – the white father-of-four staged it all himself.
On December 12, Williams called police to report the shocking incident, which authorities began to investigate as both arson and a hate crime. Meanwhile, the Williams family reaped a bounty of donations from sympathizers on their GoFundMe page, many of whom expressed their disgust at the attack.
This week, though, Jenny Williams took to Facebook to unload a weight off her shoulders related to the crime.
“David confessed to spray painting our garage door and starting the fire at our home,” she wrote in a public post. “My heart is heavy, and I have more questions than answers. My children and I are in a state of shock and sadness.”
Mrs. Williams added that her husband had been checked into a “mental facility” and would be arrested after his treatment. She also assured well-wishers that their donations would be returned.
Police have not announced their discovery of any motive behind the faked crime; insurance fraud seems unlikely since the Williams family’s insurance would not cover the fire damage. Authorities also have yet to confirm that Mr. Williams had actually confessed.
