An Uber driver from California has been hailed as a hero for helping to rescue a teenager from a sex trafficking ring when he alerted authorities to suspicious activity surrounding the young girl.
Keith Avila, a rideshare driver from Elk Grove, California, felt uneasy after he dropped off a teenaged girl and two older women at a nearby Holiday Inn. Not long after he completed the trip, Avila phoned police to fill them in about his hunch.
Authorities confirmed that the two women, named Destiny Pettway and Maria Westly, acted as pimps by arranging for a sexual encounter between the girl and 20-year-old Disney Vang, who was subsequently arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a minor.
Pettway and Westly also face charges related to pimping and pandering – crimes that might have never come to light were it not for Avila’s intuition.
“I looked at her in the eyes. She had this face of innocence and (looked) insecure,” Avila told Fox 59.
Elk Grove police officer Chris Trim praised Avila for his role in potentially saving the teenager from months of exploitation.
“He could have said nothing and went on his way, collected his fare,” Trim said. “Then that 16-year-old victim could have been victimized again by who knows how many different people over the next couple of days, weeks, months.”
