George H.W. Bush was taken to Houston Methodist Hospital over the weekend and is now in ICU being treated for a respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia. The 41st President is stable and resting comfortably after being sedated for a procedure to protect and clear his airway.
His wife, Barbara Bush, was also admitted to the same hospital after experiencing fatigue and coughing on Wednesday morning. Mr. Bush is 92 years old and Mrs. Bush is 91. The couple celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary earlier this month.
The Bushes will be unable to attend President-Elect Trump’s inauguration on Friday. The former president sent a note to Donald Trump last week, explaining why they would miss the event. “My doctor says if I sit outside in January, it likely will put me six feet under,” he wrote. “Same for Barbara, So I guess we’re stuck in Texas.”
