Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) seemed to think that he was about to demolish Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) after the two got into a Senate-floor scuffle concerning a Trump Cabinet confirmation hearing, but Cotton managed to turn things around in a spectacular fashion.
Schumer and Cotton reportedly started butting heads on Friday when Senate Democrats decided to delay the confirmation hearing of Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-KS) for CIA director, which was planned for that day until Schumer suddenly decided to push it back. Cotton grew so angry that he verbally attacked Schumer for breaking his promise.
In response, Schumer retaliated by saying that the Senate had never confirmed a CIA director Inauguration Day and pointed to the fact that the Senate Republicans also delayed President Barack Obama’s pick – something Cotton would have known, Schumer said, if he had been in the Senate eight years ago.
“Eight years ago, I was getting my ass shot in Afghanistan,” Cotton intensely fired back. “So don’t talk to me where I was 8 years ago.” Indeed, Cotton is an Army veteran who served two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan during his service.
Regardless of the Democrats’ attempt to stall the nomination process, Pompeo was confirmed by the Senate on Monday. Schumer accused Republicans of trying to fast-track Trump’s nominations through to the Cabinet without proper vetting.
