The New York Times reporter, now identified as Jacob Bernstein, who got publicly called out by model Emily Ratajkowski for calling First Lady Melania Trump a “hooker” has issued an apology via Twitter for remarks that were widely criticized as misogynistic and unbecoming of a member of the press.

Ratajkowski, who supported Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) during the Democratic presidential primary, originally took to Twitter to air her grievances about Bernstein’s comments, although she did not refer to him by name.

“Sat next to a journalist from the NYT last night who told me ‘Melania is a hooker.’ Whatever your politics it’s crucial to call this out for what it is: slut shaming. I don’t care about her nudes or sexual history and no one should,” Ratajkowski wrote. “Gender specific attacks are disgusting sexist bullshit.”

In a subsequent Twitter post, Ratajkowski linked to a picture of a message that described the escort rumors surrounding Melania Trump as “completely false” and insisted that “alleging someone was a sex worker and using that as an insult is not OK.”

The first lady showed her appreciation for Ratajkowski’s defense on Twitter, where she wrote: “Applause to all women around the world who speak up, stand up, and support other women!” while tagging Ratajkowski and using the hashtags #PowerOfTheFirstLady and #PowerOfEveryWoman.

Bernstein, the son of essayist Nora Ephron, allegedly made the comments during an event related to New York Fashion Week. The New York Times censured Bernstein in a statement, noting that he had been reprimanded and blasting his remark as “completely inappropriate.”
