Love is in the air for U.S. soccer standout Abby Wambach, but the object of her affection might surprise some folks: this week, Wambach announced that she is set to wed Glennon Doyle Melton, a popular Christian blogger who entered the spotlight thanks to her musings about her devout faith and her marriage to ex-husband Craig Melton.
The happy couple announced their engagement via Instagram, with Melton posting a picture of their clasped hands and engagement rings along with the caption: “Abby and I decided to hold hands forever. First, fiercely, and forever.”
Last September, Wambach and ex-wife Sarah Huffman called it quits after three years of marriage. Only two months later, Wambach and Melton decided to break the news about their budding romance.
“Feels like the world could use all the love it can get right now, so today, I’m going to share with you my new love,” Melton wrote in another Instagram post of her with Wambach. “Her name is Abby. You might recognize her from soccer. She was one of the best players of all time, and she has been a fierce and committed advocate for women’s equality for a decade. And honestly? Those are the least impressive things about her.”
Both Melton and Wambach have remained candid about certain painful aspects of their past. In her book “Love Warrior,” Melton described the pain she went through after discovering that her ex-husband had been carrying on an affair throughout their relationship.
Wambach fell from grace in April 2016 when she was arrested for driving under the influence, but in the months to follow, Wambach credited her brush with the law for pushing her to seek treatment for her addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs/
“I was stubborn and I was in denial,” she said at the time. “I didn’t want to face the truth.”
