Apparently, it runs in the family: a mother and son from Detroit are telling the world about their decision to undergo gender transitions to become father and daughter, with the mother claiming that she was inspired to confront her own gender confusion thanks to her teenage child’s coming out.
Erica Maison, who now goes by Eric, and her 15-year-old child Corey Maison say that their bizarre journey began four years ago, when Corey first started identifying publicly as a female. At the time, Eric was struggling with her gender identity issues but had yet to tell either her husband, Les, or the rest of her family.
Eric’s coming out was bittersweet: “The first feeling was relief, the second was terror. Fear for what my future would hold, fear for how my family and children would react, fear for what the rest of my life was going to look like,” she told 9 News.
Fortunately for Eric, her family’s reaction was positive and her husband decided to stay with her and work on the relationship, sticking by her as she underwent a double mastectomy and began taking male hormones.
“I fell in love with the person. She was beautiful as a woman, but equally beautiful on the inside,” Les said. “As long as Eric is happy with the appearance, Eric will be happy with what’s in her brain – or his brain.”
