Is anyone surprised that the most humiliating fake news debacle of the year (and perhaps the decade) has spelled disaster for MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow? The audience has spoken after the diehard liberal pulled one of the biggest bait-and-switches in cable news history and the results could very well mean that Maddow’s career is headed the way of the dodo.
“BREAKING: We’ve got Trump tax returns. Tonight, 9pm ET. MSNBC. (Seriously.),” Maddow posted Tuesday night on Twitter, kicking off a firestorm of speculation… only for the entire parade to come screeching to a halt after she simply coughed up two pages of his 2005 returns that revealed that Trump paid $38 million in income taxes out of his $150 million earnings.
The debacle proved to be a big win for the Trump administration, proving that the president paid a vastly higher percentage and gross amount than liberal darling Bernie Sanders. It also proved to be a disaster for Maddow, who became an overnight laughingstock for pundits on both sides of the aisle.
But her ratings were the true casualty, plummeting a whopping 36 percent from one day to the next, and nine prevent from the previous week. Among the key 25 to 54-year-old demographic, Maddow’s numbers slid even further, with a 54 percent decline overnight and a 16 percent week-over-week plunge. Ouch.
Although her sensationalized story managed to beat out Fox News’s Tucker Carlson on Tuesday, the universe corrected itself by the following day, with “Tucker Carlson Tonight” pulling in a whopping 1.1 million more viewers as the popular anchor interviewed the president himself.
