In the latest display of their religion’s dedication to peace and tolerance, a group of Muslim parents in Berlin have started withdrawing their children from school after learning that one of the teachers at the kindergarten is a gay man.
According to the managing director of the Reinickendorf kindergarten, all but one of the students at the school are from Muslim families who “come from another world” in which homosexuality is perceived as a threat to children.
“We are living in 21st century Berlin,” the manager said, insisting that she would not fire the teacher, identified as Christian Berger, for his sexuality. She also noted that the parents “went on the warpath,” organizing a petition and collecting signatures demanding that Berger lose his job for offending their sensibilities.
Berger blamed the parents’ attitudes on the culture of their homeland, noting that the majority of them come from the Middle East and Turkey. “For some of them, they think homosexuals are automatically child molesters. As a gay man, one walks a fine line,” he said.
Now, several of the most vocal parents have withdrawn their students from the school, while others continue to seek methods to strip Berger of his job. The maligned educator, meanwhile, simply wants to get back to work.
“Our role as kindergarten teachers is to help children develop in a healthy and normal way,” Berger said, complaining that the controversy has caused parents to “constantly” monitor him and interrupt the learning experience in the process.
