Former NFL star turned convicted murder Aaron Hernandez was found dead in his prison cell after he allegedly hanged himself, Massachusetts prison officials revealed on Wednesday. He was found at around 3:00 am and rushed to a nearby hospital only to be pronounced dead an hour later.
According to the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, Hernandez was jailed in a single cell in the general population housing unit at Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley. He apparently attached a bed sheet to his cell window to carry out the grisly suicide.
Officials also claim that Hernandez attempted to block his cell door from the inside by jamming it with several possessions, briefly hampering first responders. The former New England Patriots tight end was taken to the UMass Memorial-HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster but all attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Now, officials have launched an investigation into the matter, as prison employees did not believe that there was any danger of Hernandez taking his own life and no suicide note was found. If her were considered a suicide risk, authorities say, he would have been transferred to a mental health unit for treatment.
Hernandez was serving a life sentence without parole for shooting and killing Odin Lloyd in 2013, who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancée Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez. Last week, he was acquitted of the 2012 slayings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, whom prosecutors alleged that Hernandez had killed after they spilled a drink on him in a nightclub.
The Patriots, who will spend the day visiting the White House to commemorate their Super Bowl victory, have declined to comment on Hernandez’s death.
